This is what happens when crappie take over a lake. These are shots from all over Shell Cracker Lake this morning. Couldn't catch a Gill.....crappie got to it first. Caught over 100 like in the pic....9 inch fish all of them. No matter where you went in the lake they were there. Wound up just playing around with the sonar. I have spoken to several in TWRA about this and hope they do something.

Wow sounds like they need to have a few weeks of 8" minimum on Crappie to thin out the population!

Are you using the most current Humminbird software update?

Are you using the most current Humminbird software update?

Yes....why do you ask? I just got off the phone with Humminbird and for those who have si units they did confirm that if sharpness is turned on in di Enhance and chart speed is set to 2.....and sometimes 3...4....or 5, you could get noise lines. It is a software problem but could not tell me when they will get it fixed. Bummer for me as in a kayak my ideal chart speed is 2.

question....some of the pics have vertical dashes spaced pretty evenly around the 5ft. mark...would that be the unit picking up your paddle or the paddle swirl or something?

They need to schedule a time slot for reduced minimal size limits it looks like.
They may be stunted.

Yes those are my paddle strokes. The transducer is mounted at my hip. The transducer looks down and behind. If I mounted the transducer in front of my paddle entry those would not be there......but I would not be able to raise transducer when beaching the kayak. I just live with it....hasn't caused me any problems yet....that I know of....LOL.

Shell Cracker is only 46 acres. The general consensus among fisheries biologist is no crappie in anything under 300 acres. They over populate and become stunted. Just not enough food for them and then the other specie in the lake could suffer. TWRA did not stock those lakes with crappie.....some fisherman thought they were being smart and let a few go in the lake.....now it has come to this. The size limit is 10 inches for crappie to be taken home from that lake legally....so that means hardly any crappie are ever removed. I have been following this situation for over four years now. The crappie in Shell Cracker are not growing......the size is always the same. The crappie in Blue Cat have grown some....but it is twice the size of Shell Cracker.....and they shouldn't be in that lake either. In talking with the biologist who work the electro shock boat they know it is a problem. They have passed it up the line but they are not the ones who decide what should be done.....they have input but others make the decision. This is the first time this year I have put the kayak in Shell Cracker with the sonar. I was shocked! Those pics in my post are indicative of the whole lake! In Blue Cat I will run into many schools of crappie but in Shell Cracker they cover the whole lake. Maybe they will change the regs and get some of the crappie out of there.

I don't think the 2D looks good on the new update. I have been having lots of problems with mine. It very grainy and there will be a weird bottom return like in the pictures you posted.

With the old versions I would see more with the 2D than in the DI, but now I see more in the DI than 2D. I don't know if the DI got better or the 2D got worse!.

I use the 2D much more than the DI so it's been very frustrating.

Good eye. Before I did the update I had good arches on the 2d up at Center Hill. In reading on several forums seems quite a few are having some problems with the 2d. Hopefully they will get it worked out.

If I could use the sharpness feature on my unit you would see fish better but until a new software update comes out I am stuck with what I have in the di mode.....but even like it is it's not too bad.

My biggest complaint with Humminbird is the 2d. I just find it easier to read Lowrance 2d returns.

I don't disagree with you. Humminbird has some issues to work out and I think they will get it done.

Can you use a big boat on that lake? Outboard? What about a bass boat that you only use the tm?

Yeah you can use any boat you can get in there....just can't crank the big motor.....TM only. The two biggest lakes there....Blue Cat and Shell Cracker.....do hold some monster large mouth and I have seen some high dollar bass boats in each lake.
