05-03: After the gathering (which was great, nice getting to meet some of the active members on here, Thanks Alpha/Leland for the DVD)
I wanted to try the night bite for Hybrids. Not knowing much about the fish, aside from follow the food, i started where i left them a few weeks ago. I found smaller groups of fish scattered about 300-400 yards where i ran into them last time. I got the first 3 on a big jigging blade before dark, no huge fish, 4-5lbs tops i would say, but still a heck of a fight. i was hoping for some killer topwater action, but they never came up where i was at. i got into another small school after dark, they were suspended over 30ft of water. I figured the big thumping blade bait would do the trick, they didnt want it, i switched over to a fluke and 1/4oz head and managed to land 2 more and lost what felt like a better fish.
all in all, a pretty good first crack at night hybrids, still waiting patiently for my first top water smash!
05-04: With the rising water temps, i knew bass were moving up and crappies were moving out, so i went with a full arsenal yesterday morning. started out bass fishing with a shallow diving crank, just beating a rock shorline, picked up 4, nothing big, maybe 16" or so was the biggest, but they hammered the crankbait, which is always fun. then i tried to find some deeper crappies, 10-14ft. i found several crappies, but none were of any size, still plenty dark too, they were biting really finicky for me, they didnt really "bite" they just sucked it in and held on, never really feeling the "tap tap". Dragging minnows along a pronounced point i found a school of kitties that were more than happy to take the minnow! those things are a blast on light line. got 4 of those, biggest was i would guess pushing about 7 lbs and just ready to pop!
i then decided to finish the day with a few more casts for some bass and was quickly reminded why most, not all, but most of the "bass" fisherman on that lake are clowns, just rude, self entitled people. Let me paint you a picture: Rocky shoreline, some scattered wood laydowns, the wind was blowing which made the perfect drifting speed down this bank and i was about 50 yards from a productive, rocky point, never had to touch the trolling motor while making my way to this point. Im casting away, in the distance i see a bass boat coming my way, closer, closer, they run about 60ft from me, ignoring the other 1/2 mile of water to the opposite shoreline, i give them the stare as they are going past, still cranking, i set the hook into a floating branch, i thought it was a fish at first so i go thru the motions of "fighting my fish" these guys turn a full 180, buzz by me again, closer this time, buzz right up and start fishing the point i was clearly making my way to go fish!!!!!! im FUMING at this point, i stop fishing, kick back in the my seat and watched those 2 morons literally take 3 casts each, fire up the big motor and drive off!
I get it, public lake, open water, ect ect, but where do people get the audacity to do things like that? Im sure he would have cried like a little girl if it was the other way around though!
Its a long, long boating and fishing season, and this was just the start of it. LOL...
Anyways, thats my fishing adventure from the weekend! Cats are on the move and biting, crappies should start schooling back up over some deeper water in the next week or 2, the river should be slowing down and clearing up! gonna be some great fishing coming up!
