View Full Version : Thoughts on Pickwick After the Rain

I'll be fishing Pickwick Friday and Saturday. Right now, it looks like they are going to bring the lake up 2 feet (412 to 414) and open the flood gates (100,000 cfs).
How long do you think they'll hold the water that high and keep the gates open?
Thoughts/ideas on fishing above and below the dam under these conditions?
I had my best day ever catching catfish on the lake when the water was high and the gates were open last May. The fish were right on the bank and the action was nonstop.

I think the lake fishing will be normal for this time of year. As for below the dam I wouldn't want to put a boat in while they are releasing 100,000 CFS and that number will rise as the next few days pass. If you are willing to bank fish below the dam after this rain event you will be catching instead of fishing. No matter if you fish the generator side or the lock side the fishing will be unbelievable. There will be huge black Gills....white bass...stripers.....Smallies...and large mouth. Over by the lock the crappie will be killing it also. You can bet that I will be burning up the roads as long as the water is high. While I don't want anyone to get flooded out I love these rain events this time of year at Pickwick. I just hope I don't break a leg or fall crawling down those rocks. But I ain't gonna miss this. I need to get over to Murfreesboro Out Doors to get me some Lindy River Rockers......I'm gonna need a lot!

NWS gauge at Savannah is predicting that the river there will crest at 362.7 (3 ft above where it was yesterday) and stay there through Thursday, which is as far out as they predict.

If they stick with the release schedule the river below dam will be 367 to 370.....probably higher....starting tomorrow. On my way to Murfreesboro Out Doors to get River Rockers.....even though winds are supposed to be 10-15 Mph I want to be there Wednesday ready to go.

It will be 375 or so by this weekend......the fish will be stacked in there. I picked up 10 River Rockers this afternoon. I'm ready!

Well they have revised the release schedule. We either didn't get as much rain as they thought or they will release more water next week. I was all pumped at 120,000 being released...but will try it anyway.

Yeah, I just saw that they revised the schedule. Could be because this is our first big spring rain they are holding water back instead of turning it loose.
I'll be there Friday and Saturday. I'll spend most of my time in the lake chasing cats from my kayak, but I want to fish the lock side of the dam for crappie too.

Where do you put in your kayak? I want to fish the rip rap all along the dam but putting in at the park makes for a long paddle.
