Coming from NY, we don't have much good catfishing. So in the midst of crappie mania and some great bass fishing the last few weeks, I've been trying to follow the advice of anyone I can in order to find some catfish. In the search for cats, I've caught EVERYTHING but cats, including a bunch of Gar. Today I finally found some luck. I went below old hickory dam to the tailwater access by Rockland rec area. For weeks now I've been watching guys buy this Sonnys sticky flathead bait like it was gold, so I gave it a whirl. Within 5 minutes I had a 12 inch 1 pounder. And for 45 minutes I'd have a 1 pounder within 2 minutes of my line hitting the water. Then I finally got what I've been looking for. Hooked into a nice 4.5 pound cat. I know, that's small by most standards down here, but after weeks of trying, it was great to pull one that big in. Now the real test, I'm gonna head out again tomorrow to see just how well this bait works on a regular basis. Will let everyone know. Till then, happy fishing!

Great catch but I will not touch. A first for me a few days a go,while fishing for trout on the Caney I caught a catfish about 24" in length. Got someone else to get hook out. First catfish I ever caught on 2 lb test line and no fight after about 10 seconds.
Also you will need some hush puppies and Louisiana hot sauce.:)

Good to see you catch some cats. If you are wanting them to eat don't worry about the giants.
The small ones taste better IMO.

Cats are a manly fish. Girly types need to stay away from them. Does someone also bait your hook. :):)
Just kidding, of course.
That fish must have been sick. I have caught cats that were as game as smallies except for the jumping.

I agree with Sambolie in most lakes and rivers catfish offer the best combination of size, fighting power, and catchable numbers of any other fish.
I'm amazed at the fight channel cats in the Duck River put up. I think it has something to do with living in the current of a river versus a lake because the channel cats in Pickwick do not put up the same fight as those river fish.
