Moving to the area! Any advise?

Hello everyone. My wife and I are going to be moving to TN from Ohio this weekend for a great job I got down in Hendersonville and we are very excited to hit the waters next week during some free time before I start. We'll be living south of Dickson in Hickman County, long drive I drive I know but we are country people and we are used to driving an hour plus for good fishing. We have a 16' deep V with a 9.9hp and for the most part like to drift or troll and target walleye, crappie, and muskie/pike but are looking forward to learning about striper fishing. From what I have seen a lot of the lake in the area aren't like these "Corps" lakes in Ohio. Mostly earth dams and slower currents are what we are used to fed by slower smaller rivers. Some of the lakes I know and interested in down there are concrete high flow with locks and hydro power fed by the Cumberland which I've seen can be a beast in volume and flow in heavy rains. Any tips for newbies to the area? Looking to go to Old Hickory but definitely open to other places. Not looking for secret spots, just want to know what to watch out for, good place to launch, and what areas we may want to try. My god man, you're going to live in Dickson and work in Hendersonville? If you want to be in the country, and have time to enjoy it, I suggest Bethpage or somewhere in Trousdale county/northern Sumner county (www.realtracs.com (http://www.realtracs.com)). You sound pretty confident but I'll give you 6 months of that commute before you go stark raving mad. I live in Hendersonville and work downtown in Nashville, 21 miles door to door, and I'm about at the breaking point with traffic.

Now about the fishing - Welcome to God's country and thank your lucky stars you are headed to middle Tennessee. In Dickson you'll be midway between Old Hickory and Kentucky Lake. Of the two Kentucky Lake is where you should focus your effort. Also pay particular attention to the lakes in the Natchez Trace State Park, Pin Oak lake specifically. Welcome! I'm also pretty new to the site but have 35 years in the area. If you like to troll for walleye, there is a beautiful lake about 50 miles east of Nashville called Centerhill lake, a friend of mine lives on a houseboat there in the summer and is always catching a mess of them trolling there. I'm sure there are better spots, but that's a great local place to do such fishing and also rent a cabin or camp and have a great time on a clean lake. Again welcome to Tennessee!

Since you are from ohio first things first.... Go get a glass of sweet tea. :)

Speaking of Old Hickory, get a map or go with a local first. The lake has plenty of shallow bars and humps with timber on them. Learn the channels and stick to them until you are familiar. Some places on the lake are not as bad as others but some are a pain if you are not paying attention.

Buccaneer first big thanks for the welcome TN is a beautiful place and is definitely God's country and thanks for the concern but I'll ok. I'll be working 4 10s Monday-Thursday and I'll just fish after work(oh darn :) ) if I have to to let traffic die down when I get off at 5:30 and I should beat morning rush hour with my 7am start time. I'm used to 45+ minute drive at my previous job 6-7 days a week.

As for fishing we'll definitely be heading to KY lake also and we'll give Pine Oak some work also. Pitbull thanks for the tip about Center Hill I think we make a weekend of that trip sometime in the future. Thank you everyone else for the welcomes and info. I'll be keeping you posted on our outings in that beautiful state!

Welcome aboard. x2 on you should go to Kentucky Lake instead of OH. Much better fishing and lots less boat traffic, especially during the summer. Cuba Landing and Mousetail Landings are great places to start. Good luck.

welcome to Tennessee. God's country? IMO, not really, that would be fishing in Ontario in the summer. Great fishing here? For sure. Kentucky lake is great along pretty much any lake in the Tennessee River system. Times have changed though, there will be fishermen, pleasure boaters, etc. and maybe plenty of them on most any Tennessee water, but the majority of the time, most people are friendly and the fishing can be good or even great.

After re-reading your post I thought of something you asked for, "what to watch out for?" On old hickory and priest as well in spots, the big thing to watch for is shallow water. You can be in 60ft of water and drift to the left or right a little and find yourself churning mud quickly! A good map of the channels and such go a long way around here and are readily available as well. A smaller slower craft may find it just somewhat of a hassle, faster units can find it pretty dangerous. Just thought of that and figured I'd pass it along, be safe.

Don't worry about Old Hickory lake as far as shallow just start around the dam area and learn dam to 5 miles up stream it will keep you busy and there is no fear of mistakes.

You will be working in Hendersonville so learn Drakes Creek.

You are closer to Ky lake as said. Right now you can drive 30 minutes and put in Cuba Landing and load up on crappie in the Marina bay.
Or drive 45 minutes up to New Johnsonville Pebble Isle Marina and do the same thing.
