for anyone interested, fished with a couple of guys over the weekend for crappie. Was told after we got done fishing that I would be buying a bunch of crappie magnets by one and bobby garlands by the other. They both tried everything, but only took them an hour or so of watching my brother and myself wear the crappie out for them to ask for 2-1/2" white twister tail. Funniest was the crappie magnet guy, he couldn't believe we were each catching 4 to 5 crappie to his one throwing in the exact same spot. I personally believe this time of year it should not matter but the white twister tail could not be beat. The fish were anywhere from 2-5 feet deep.

I fished Saturday with live minnows, white and chartreuse twister tails (small ones) and Crappie Magnets (various colors). Both twister tails and Crappie Magnets out-produced live minnows (both more fish and larger fish). Both twister tails and Crappie Magnets produced equally well for me. I was slow trolling eight rods with two jigs each behind the boat at 1.0 mph. This weekend was my first experience with Crappie Magnets. Placed another order from Leland's Lures on Sunday evening!

Ive tried and tried and tried Crappie Magnets. jigged, twitched, rolled, trolled, hopped, cranked, flicked, dragged, with and without a bobber and any other method that can describe how to work an ultra light plastic for any species that swims in fresh, salt or brackish waters...lol. i just dont catch enough fish on them to justify my using them. I still have the ones i bought, but they have been down-graded to my "skip-jack baits" box. Ive had great luck with Bobby Garlands for the past 3-4 years so thats my go-to bait anymore. Love my Mr. Twisters as well, they are the only curly tail i will buy!

Everyone has their go to lure and as stated earlier you should dance with the one that brung ya!! At the same time a lot of people on this forum have had good success with the TM/CM. As a side note the owner of TM/CM has helped several members on this forum and has donated lots of product for different causes. I personally saw him spend 30 minutes talking with a guy and ended up giving the guy a lot of product because it was obvious the gentleman didn't have a lot of money but had a passion for fishing. As for me my go to will be the TM/CM but it is most definitely not the only lure in my arsenal but it is one that I am very comfortable using. I also am proud to rep for a company that is founded and operates on Christian values. Good luck and good fishing!!!!

Just stirring the pot. It does amaze me the number of people who believe you have to have a certain color, brand bait, crappie niblets or giblets or whatever they are (a guide told me he NEVER fishes without the crappie bites or whatever they are). I am pretty sure there are times that you need something special or a particular bait or method to catch crappie, but I will almost guarantee you the next couple weeks you can probably catch crappie on most anything. I caught some last Saturday on a 1/2 oz. chatterbait. I have caught them on buzzbaits, hula poppers, #13 floating rapalas, 3/4 oz willow leaf spinnerbaits, plastic worms, bubble gum flukes, my dads favorite bait many years ago was a Hawaiin wiggler, almost anything this time of the year. I am not that good a crappie fisherman because it is the only time I fish for them, when they come up shallow and they are eating. The rest of the year I have never fished for them. Also, I never fished for crappie before 10 in the morning. Before there was a limit my friend and myself had many 200 fish days and 150 was about average when the crappie came up shallow, our best was somewhere around 250. I guess it is a good thing (we were much younger and stupid, would not keep that many now even if it was legal, I did supply the fish for fish fries then though) that we only got to fish a couple days when the crappie are "catchable" back then. The last few years, I have only been able to fish a couple hours at a time. Sure miss the times I got fish as much as I wished to an extent.

I do have many things (fishing and hunting) that I am very particular about, crappie fishing right before they go on bed is not one of them though.

My son works with a guy who is from Kentucky and went up there with him to see his family one weekend and crappie fishing conversation came up. When my son told them about catching crappie in the daytime they had never heard of such...they told him crappie don't bite in the day time..LOL. They were serious, and only fished after midnight and was off the water before sunrise......the moral of the story, folks need to do what is best for themselves.

Confidence in what you tie on and fish with in certainly a huge factor when fishing. It really took alot for me to convert from some form of live bait for crappie to the vast array of artificials designed for targeting them. Dont get me wrong.....lol.....i never hit the water without have a dozen or two minnows at hand as a back up....thats my mental security blanket i guess. If all else fails, at the end of the day, its hard for a crappie to turn down a live minnow....but that still happens too none the less.
Alpha...being from the north, we didnt have alot of cat fish in the great lakes so when i came down here, i had no idea for a length of time i choose not to disclose....lol.....that catfish could be caught during the day in any numbers!

Before there was a limit my friend and myself had many 200 fish days and 150 was about average when the crappie came up shallow, our best was somewhere around 250.

I do like the cm/tm and Jeff is a great person with a great product.
I have many other plastics also. I have found sometimes they want bigger than the crappie magnet. So I toss a twister tail even a 6 inch jacks worm. I am not number crappie guy I like the 13 to 17 inchers. Before I met Jeff at his first Nashville show I used the 2.5 inch slider grub as my confidence bait for crappie. We sometime (I have been guilty) study analyze read articles listen to thepros to much. Being on your home body of water and learning it during all conditions is a very important piece of pie. I used to take just one lure and fish all day when learning the creeks. Ex. two packs of 4inch slider black and a motoroil. I often now only have two styles of plastic in my wading bag if targeting smallies and Rockbass I just have 2 to 5 different colors. A suspending jerk bait can be deadly on crappie but when they are tight to cover it can be expensive. Fall/winter and early spring works well for me.My biggest problem with the suspened jerk is not letting sit long enough between pauses.

I can't wait to see MNfisher throw a Quarter the length of a pigskin!!!!

Sorry, MNfisher, I know what you are saying, but we caught them in those numbers and more times than I can remember. I was not there but there were 2 times my friend and his dad had over 200 white bass in a day out of priest (before there was a limit) and I know it because I helped clean them. In my early 20's I kept fish I would never dream of keeping now. Also, I would doubt those numbers are possible now. Way to many people fishing and the pressure on the crappie (every species of fish in Priest) is off the chart compared to what it was back then.

I am not putting down crappie magnets or bobby garlands or any other lure and I am sure they work and the CM guy helps people out, but especially for the guys just starting out those lures can be expensive when compared to a plain white curly tail grub. The next couple weeks, crappie will hit anything for the most part. I have caught a few on a bare jig, when my curly tail came off on the cast. I can remember (I am still FAR from being considered anything near wealthy) when I sat with a heat source of some kind and melted all kinds of plastic baits so I could fish more with them because I did not have the extra money to buy any. I purchased a lead pot a long time ago and when I pour biats, I pour what I need in a large quantity. I have only poured 1/16 oz jigheads one time over 20 years ago and may never have to pour them again in order to save money. I use small line so when I hang up I can break off without moving the structure.

We'd fill a 32 gallon barrel full and distribute them to the people on my street.

I didn't care to eat them as they tasted like diesel fuel from the barges kicking up the sediment and roiling it in their exhaust stream.

Oh, and I used to run the 100 yd dash in 9.5 seconds!!

I have been using Trout Magnets with pretty good success for years. They are especially good when taking kids bream fishing... I'd rather tie one TM on than put 20 crickets on a hook.

fish whisperer, if I get room and you want to, maybe you can fish with me one day during bluegill bedding time and you may be the first, but I do not even remember how many different people i have taken fishing for bluegill when they go on bed over my lifetime, so far no one can outcatch a cricket and many have tried. My personal favorite way is with a flyrod and a popping bug and when it is good I put a fly behind it and catch 2 at a time fairly often.

One of the best fishermen I know, he is a "fish catcher" for sure was positive beyond the shadow of a doubt that I would give up the crickets, but after about 30 minutes, (he told me that they outfished live bait and you didn't have to chase crickets, I live with crickets in my boat for a few weeks after bluegill time so I was great, I am all for it, I told him the same thing, it hadn't happened yet) well he put the trout magnets and a couple other small plastic baits up and started fishing with crickets. Hard to keep with a cricket when the float goes under as soon as it stands up and does that for a long time.

One that still has me puzzled though, is fishing for rock bass in the stones river. I love to watch a float, so many times I catch live crawfish and fish them under a float. A couple of times a friend of mine has caught 4 or 5 to my one on a slider worm in irish whiskey color, they would hit the slider when it was beside my live crawfish, at least his line was right beside my float and it appeared the slide was very close to the crawfish under it. I would have never believed it but the first time I was begging for sliders and the next time I was prepared.

I love using crickets. But when you take an 8 and 10yo fishing it's a lot easier to tie on a TM than trying to keep crickets on their hooks.

crickets don't bother me. when I take a kid fishing, I don't fish, I bait the kids hooks and help take the fish off, so the crickets are not a bother in that respect either.

Head hunter, does all your Crappie come out of the brush you put in? what do you look for when putting brush out, like depth, bottom composition, orientation to south, close to a creek etc., I would like to begin to do this in Normandy but want some advice, would this work there the way it does at JPP, any advice will be appreciated!

It took me a while. I think I pulled every other slider worm off the rack first, but I found Irish Whiskey. I'll try them out on the Duck River this summer.
