View Full Version : Rough Day

I'm sure everybody has these type of days but it was definitely the first one for the year.
Put in at Fate Sanders and realize that I left both the head units to my humminbirds on the table at home, so no depth or gps. Put in and run out to the spot. So stinking windy I can barely keep my lines from tangling up. Drag around for maybe an hour and catch 2 shorts. Go to start up and move and somethings up with the motor. With idle fine and rev up fine out of gear, but the minute I put it in gear, it either dies or bogs down and shakes horribly. So I limp back to the dock. It crazy windy and the outboard wont stay running in gear long enough so I jump up on the trolling motor to maneuver around in the marina. Go to take my home made rod holder down to stow the trolling motor, hit the wrong pedal and it tosses me and I spin the rod holder straight off into the drink, goodbye! Finally get the boat on the trailer and head home after a miserable 2 two hours! If someone fishes out a 4 rod holder off the ramp at Fate Sanders, its mine.
a little funny after I read it.

I dumped my Dad and I off my kayak on Caney Fork last year trying a bad last minute turn into a cove with the river up.
Two phones and a camera ruined, several lost rods, a knife and who knows what else.
Lessons were learned. It doesn't sting so bad after a year or so.

I have got to go under my house Sunday and fiberglass a leaking sewer line !! ... On my knees ... Man My old knees hurt ... But Mama has Spoken !! ..
The smell in the garage has got to go ... But I told her it has been only been three days ... Answer ... Three days to long ... .. So I need prayers from the sewer Gods on Sunday !!
Note ... The trooper she is has had two knee replacements in the last 12 months ... She volunteered knowing my knees were worst than hers .. But she will never be able to put pressure on her knees again ... I said no .. you know nothing about fiberglass ... ... So prayers from the Sewer gods and membership and for a quick set on the fiberglass would be greatly appreciated .... <'TK>< :):)

I was having a beer at Anchor High marina yesterday and looking out at the docks. Told the wife, "I sure don't miss doing that first shakedown cruise of the season. That was the best part of selling that boat." and ordered a second beer.
I feel your pain... it will get better.

That is a rough day! TK- good luck!!
As far as the motor goes, the one time that happened to me, there was twine wrapped around the prop so tight it would not let it spin. Probably not your problem, but may be worth a check.

Check your lower unit oil. If it has run dry, the bearing are seizing up and bogging the motor dry. It's either that or the opinion offered below with line or rope in the prop.

backdoc, What engine do you have?
If it is a V-6 OMC you could have a temp sensor bad on one of the cylinders.
I would first check the fuel filter. Next the plugs if you have been doing a lot of ultra low speed trolling or idling around.

That was a bad day.
I towed someone in last night on JPP, he had a long way to go in the wind with only the trolling motor working. (out of gas, gauge says plenty)

Alright. Follow up. Got home and inspected. Im thinking prop, bad fuel lines, filters, something. Took the hood off and smell smoke. Wires for the stator are fired and burned the whole bundle of wires with it. got so hot that it melted a hole in the back of the oil reservoir. Took it in today and looks like an expensive fix. Not good.

This is a question for Heiny and all others reading this.
When you meet a person who is broke down, out of gas, no power anything. I understand it is a courtesy to tow them back to port.
I had a friend get hailed down by a "stranded" boater last week and wanted a tow back in. He towed the guy for thirty minutes back to the ramp where he was parked. The towed boater offered no compensation for my friend's time, trouble, or fuel.
We all see stranded motorists on the side of the road and rarely stop to offer assistance, and don't tow them home for sure. So my question is Are we obligated to stop and tow someone in?
I have towed a fair number of boats back to port. Small boats out of gas, not enough power to go against the wind, sailboaters that don't know how to navigate in the wind, and one guy who ran out of battery power on a trolling motor only lake.
Give me some feedback on this, please.
I mean we are all supposed to have insurance on our cars, or we pay a towing company to haul our cars home. So why not have a policy for our boats, which makes more sense to me. In a car, you can stay there til your tow truck arrives. In your boat, who is to say if anyone will come by, or where you will wind up when the wind gets a hold of you.
Here is a link to BoatUS that is a reasonable insurer who will come and get you wherever you are. Check out the website.
If you are a boater who spends as many days on the water as some of us do, it's a good idea to have this. They even cover your boat on the highway.

I believe that my previous boat policies covered tow in.
I have been towed when my engine blew. I was on the Cumberland about 2 miles from Commodore Marina. It was pouring rain and lightning, yet a boated stopped to assist. I offered payment and he would not accept. I would have paid a lot that day.
I have returned this courtesy and I would never accept payment to assist someone in need of a tow on the lake.
There is a huge difference in being broken down on the lake and on the side of the road.
I do not think we are obligated to help anyone in need by human standards. However, I do think that it is a Christian obligation and that we will be rewarded with better payment than $ for reaching out to help others.
I do think that it is rude not to offer compensation to those who help in these situations.
If the boat in need of a tow was full of bikini clad beauties would you leave them adrift?

last year I towed someone from between jefferson springs ramp and the forks all the way to mona. I had never been to mona and he told me it was just around the corner, its not. It was so dark that I had him and his wife drive me back to jefferson to get my truck. They did pay very well but I guess it couldve been bad.
Ive been towed in my fair share so I have a hard time not lending that favor. The smart*** in me also has no problems telling someone that they shouldve have offered to pay if they didnt. Doesnt mean I have to take it, ,means u should always offer.

While I think it is rude not to offer compensation, karma has a way of catching up to you if you don't stop and help.
