Someone told me a better area of JPP to hunt for Crappie so I headed that way. Can't give out where since I don't know if he'd want me to. It's not a secret, plenty of boats Crappie fishing there but still, it's the code of swapping spots!

Got out there about 7am and fished with my double rigs I made with 1/16oz jigheads and curly tail grubs. I marked a lot of fish and brushpiles so I knew the area to keep floating over. I had one rod hanging off each side of the kayak, butts of the rod under my knee to keep them secure, and was backpaddling slowly watching for the hit. I did get my first Hybrid and it was 14.98998 inches long, barely missed the oven so off it swam to grow a bit. I caught several short Crappie, one bluegill, and 7 keepers this way. I fished for about 4 hours.

Later on I met up with Merv and him being the generous guy he is gave me 10 of his keepers. He had 12 rods I think and was doing quite well!

Two of my fishing goals this year were to learn Crappie fishing and catch my first Hybrid. The first is in progress and the second has finally happened. Good start to things! God gave us a beautiful Spring day to fish, I hope plenty of you got out on the water!

Also check out the pic named "NeatScreenshot". I got a screen shot where you can see my double rigged jigs moving up and down and then you can see a much bolder line underneath them rise up to the bottom jig. That was a fish hitting the lure! I set the hook and missed it and you can see the fish swim back down. Neat stuff!

Bet you are ready to get another hybrid now. Soon you wont be able to sleep because you just know somewhere they are biting and txnative or mnfisher is catching them. By the time summer rolls around after all the stress you just break down and go catch brookies on the Caney.

Don't say i didn't warn you....

Nice fish sir! The Hybrid are definitely on the move. I lost one today or my grandfather and I would have had our limit today.

That's funny...I have an 11 year old yellow lab that always checks my livewells when I get home. She knows if I grab that orange bucket its chow time! She gets the boneless scraps and egg sacs of the Crappie or Sauger I bring home.

Travis and Issac - I know exactly where to catch the big ones but the water needs to warm up a bit. A friend, who may or may not divulge his identity and the location on this forum, took me there last Spring but it was too early and cold for the Hybrids. We tried and failed. Then he started catching the crap out of them while I was too busy with college to make a trip. Glad that's over now :D Big Hybrids.. I'm comin' for ya!

Ours is a golden retriever/yellow lab mix and I bet she'd eat egg sacs with no problem. Only thing is she'd have awful breath haha. She was very interested in those Crappie though and we gave her a few bits after I cooked some of them. She was happy!
