Got out this morning with a buddy. We got into a "decent" striper bite...you know, 8-12 lbers crashing bait on top for around 2 hrs...nothing too exciting. Biggest fish landed was well north of the average 8-12 we were catching. All were caught on either a Zara Spook or a 1/2 oz jighead with a 4" white shad imitation.

It's all in the camera angle. I could have made this one look as big if I wanted to.

Seriously, that's a nice fish. Did that thing tow you around the lake for a while?

I was set up so that I wasn't going to move at all, actually. I did get really nervous about the time I could see the mono backing thru my braid and the fish was still making my reel sound like a high-pitched squeal. I had 10 lb Ande mono as a leader and 10 lb fireline crystal (fave braid) on a 7' med power spinning rod. Needless to say, I was way undergunned. The 8-12 lb fish were fun, but I didn't expect anything that size to show up. I must have built up a lot of good karma and had God listening to my prayers the entire fight. The big striper could easily have ended up being filed in the "lost a biggun" files if it hadn't fought exactly the way it did. Once I got my lip grips in her mouth, I let out a huge sigh of relief and let out a Mike Iaconelli scream that should've been audible for miles.

Chris, Randy the Alphahawk and I have had these discussions before ... Don't take a Knife to a Gun fight ... You could have ended up in New Orleans if a 50+ plus pound rogue Mama had showed up ... The only thing that saved you was the small bait ... Next time if you want to take a trip ... Think Big bait and a broom stick for a rod ... and a note of Next to kin !! LOL !! ;)<'TK>< Good fish ... !!

In my mind, I sounded like Gerard Butler in "300," in reality, who knows and I don't care. I like my manly perception better, lol.

TK, the rod choice was appropriate for the situation, it was the big striper who crashed the party that caused problems, lol. If a 50 lber would've shown up, I would have broken my rod and lost her...then I would've broken everything else in reach out of anger, and I would still be crying today. I got extremely lucky with that fish, and have no problem telling anyone that my skill alone was by no means the reason I was able to get a photo with a big ol' Morone saxatilis.

On a side note, the pic of me and this special striper will be used by FeelFree kayaks on their full-page ad in next month's issue of Kayak Angler magazine, and possibly other publications, as well. I was contacted by FeelFree after posting the picture on their Facebook page...looks like my luck didn't end when I left the water :)

Congrats Chris. I know you fish harder, longer, and in a lot worse conditions than a lot of us do. So when you catch fish like that, you deserve the kudos and admiration from us (me especially) couch potatoes who don't brave/fight the elements.

Nice catch and glad to hear you are being "printed".

Alright Merv don't go overboard here. :D

He sent me a pic of the Ad and it looks really good. Chris gets an attaboy for that one. I wish he could have landed the one last week that drug his kayak with anchor down eventually snagging the anchor up.

Good job bro. Such modesty, you tha man. A wise man once told me, you got to be there before luck can happen. Looks like you put yourself in the right place at the right time. Congrats. I need to get out more. By the way wasn't meaning you weren't skillful in your fishing, just that I have always counted my blessings and considered myself lucky when they start blowing up on bait, especially for that long.

I was asked to join FeelFree Kayaks Fishing Team as a result of events stemming back to this summer, and apparently the last domino to fall was my photo being used in their new ad campaign. Looks like that striper, while not my biggest, had turned into the best fish I've caught in a looooong time, lol.

Thank you for showing me the local waters, and teaching me what I know about line sides, you changed my life forever. I'm a better and more well rounded angler due to you.
