Harpeth Rough Day

Went to the stocking where the dam used to be...saw our friend Ed (tcitn) from across the river...I was wading and talking on the phone and took a bad fall...dropped the iPhone 5 in the nasty Harpeth...found it after 10 minutes and it works! Ha! So I'm still doing the ziploc bag full of rice treatment to get the rice out.

Didn't catch a fish but banged up my leg pretty good. That's what I get. Waders full of water and all my clothes soaked...drove home through Franklin without a shirt on!

A guy there at the Harpeth said he had been to Nice Mill earlier today and that people were catching em like crazy but that it was too crowded for him and his son to get a spot...I only saw about 5 caught where I was and there were only about 8 of us fishing (early afternoon)...maybe some people were catching them early and then left...but it was slow while I was there.

Man, good thing it wasn't worse. Hypothermia is only a couple degree drop in body temp...doesn't take much.

I was worried about that happening when I got my new I-Phone so before leaving the store grabbed a Life Proof box. Will get the Life Jacket as well for it.

Yep I was at nice mills and I think I saw that guy. I was wondering where Ed was.

I'm sure it's been posted before but I'll say it again.

Have a change of clothes, a towel, shoes etc. in the car or boat for times like these. One never knows when one will take a spill wading, trip and stumble out of a boat.

I'm overly cautious. I have a small propane heater, towel, complete change of clothes ( right down to underwear, long johns, socks, T-shirt) AND an insulated hunting suit, spare hats, gloves, balaclavas, and hand warmers all packed away in a waterproof box strapped to the rear area of my bass boat when I am fishing in these cold waters. It only takes a couple minutes in cold water for your muscles to shut down.

You may save YOUR life, or your friends life....or maybe some strangers', if you (and they) are fortunate enough to be there when help is needed.

I saw a friend go through the ice of a "snow hidden" pond, up to his chest in 20 degree weather. Luckily his van was only 100 yards away, I was there when he went down (pulled him out by his gun barrel, after he unloaded it), and helped him to his camper/van. He undressed as I fired up his propane heater and got a blanket around him. Very scary stuff, thinking of how it could have gone wrong if I hadn't been near him when he went in.

None of us are invincible or infallible. Think SAFETY.

Agree with others.I also keep towels,as well as set of clothes,socks,underwear an old jacket.
Wanted to go to Nice's Mill but a young man from Columbia wanted me to meet him and show him how to fish the T M.He did great and he caught one of those big trout they always put in,around 3 lb.

I can tell you the first hand of the dangers of wading. Two years ago was wading for crappie and fell....tried to catch myself and tore my rotator cuff. I had surgery but it is not right still. I did a stupid thing by wading in water that was not clear....learned a big lesson there. Glad to hear you are OK.

Ha! 21st century trout fishing. I started to take a picture of you standing in the water with a fly rod in one hand, line in the other, and a phone screwed in your ear. I didn't see you take a spill though.

TWRA dumped 1200 fish at approximately 8:30. I never saw more than a couple of fish per person. We went to lunch about 1:00, came back about 2:00 and got back after it. It picked up a little closer to dark. I wound up with three taken on a trout magnet. Bubblegum or white is all that produced for me.

At the spot I was fishing, you could see the fish in the water. I bounced a TM off of their nose and they didn't want it. I drank the Kool-Aid on these trout magnets and was a little disappointed.

Big rain moving in Saturday, but I plan on trying again Sunday.

I've been to Brainerd for the NHRA event up there - those race fans are CRAZY - like wild crazy... For the last six years I've been doing the Polar Bear Plunge at Percy Priest on New Years day. In a couple of weeks I'll take my 7th plunge - but I'm sure it isn't as chilly as MN!

I think that was me you talked to. I was there with my youngest son in the early afternoon.

We didn't catch anything at the drop spot Friday either.

Went back with a friend on Sunday and also got nothing.

I decided to try a spot several miles down river and found a couple there.

Got them on Purple Haze Crappie Magnets.

The only thing I would add is I also carry a pack of tea light candles with matches. The candle packs are cheap as dirt and easy to get a small fire started if need be.
