Big Tilapia

Caught this Tilapia at the Steam Plant this morning while Crappie fishing....I've heard of them being caught around there but I haven't seen any of this size!

The reports of tilapia being caught around the Steam Plant really interest me. I haven't caught one there, though I've caught them in Florida.

Do they seem to be pretty well-established around the Steam Plant now? Does anybody know where they are coming from?

I remember when I was a kid throwing those trash fish on the ground. until I realized they tasted ok and then we took them home lol.

Yes. There is a barrier across the canal right at the mouth.

really nice fish Hick!!, I remember fishing for them back in Mexico and the ones like you are holding are an average size but they do grow bigger since we have really mild winters and they would eat anything!! great fighters, man they really give a good tussle and never quit!! they taste good too!!:D

I caught that one on a Rapala shad rap. I've heard of people catching them there but like I said, that's the first one for me. It is now sitting in a bowl in my fridge along with Crappie filets! Lol
Bd is right, there is a floating barrier across the mouth along with 3 buoys that say Keep Out.

Do a forum search and you will see a bunch of them caught out of there last year......some big ones also.

Some good eats there! I didn't realize TN had Tilapia or that they could even handle the colder water in winter. I thought they were strictly FL/TX fish.

A friend of mine arrowed a Mullet below Ky Dam several years ago. I was in awe enough to call Ky Fish & Wildlife to tell them about it. They said "yeah, they've been turning up for a few years now," ... you just never know what surprizes are underwater! :D

Tn doesnt normally have Tilapia. I think its from the big flood a few years ago and from farm ponds that they were raised (just a guess if someone else know otherwise please chime in). They don't survive cold water which is why you find them in the steam plant canal so heavy in the winter. With the canal closed for basically the next 2 years we should have a heavy population of them since my understanding is they spawn often and grow very fast

W95v6 ... I think you may have been catching buffalo, Drum or carp ... You are in your early 30's now, you said you were a kid ... ... Tilapia have only appeared in this past decade ... <'TK>< :)

ahh about a yr or soo lol. I I can remember throwing a cast net and It being so full it would not close. those things are thicker then flies on Sh*$t down there.
