Pin Oak info?

We'll be staying at a Villa at Natchez Trace St Prk this weekend and was hoping to put the boys, 8year olds, on some fish. Has anyone fished this and able to offer some tips? Searching didn't bring too many results. Thanks!

I camp there just about every other weekend. Lately I have been trolling crank baits and catching nice crappie, small bass, lots of yellow bass, and an occasional bream or redear. Wore the bream out there back in June and July on crickets. Are you fishing from a boat or bank fishing?

We're staying in a villa, not taking any boats with us. So, we'll have our boat dock and, if we can find it, bank fishing. The boys and I are really looking forward to it!

You have other lakes in the park that could be good also. I used to fish them quite often spring and summer....don't know how it is in the fall there.

Pinoak is a pretty large lake with many fingers going off the main lake with many coves in each of the fingers. A boat will really open up your opportunities for finding fish. Live bait either crickets or worms will keep your kids busy even just about any where along the bank catching bream and the occasional small bass. The lake has a population of nice size bluegills and huge redears but small fish will be the most likely catch bank fishing right now.

Browns Creek (TWRA Permit) Cub Creek, Sycamore, Maple Creek, Redbud, are all within the park. No permit is required fishing Pinoak though if you are staying at the park. Some of these are Beech River Watershed lakes which require an even different permit.

There is easy access to a large portion of the lake with all the trails people have made camping there and staying in the cabins. Try to search for deeper,steeper banks, most of my fish came out of 12-14 feet last weekend. I had several days there this summer where I caught over 400 bream a day anywhere from 18 inches to 4 feet deep. Also note there are currently no size limits on any species of fish at Pinoak. 30 Crappie per day unlike other state park lakes that have 15 fish limits. State creel limits apply to all other species other than crappie.

Thanks for the info. I'm primarily a catch and release ultralight fisherman. I'm quite happy with the kids getting quantity over quality if we spend our time fishing from the dock. I may try jugging for the first time and for a DIY project for the boys. I'll have my trout and crappie magnets and the boys will love the worms. No doubt we'll walk some trails too! Thanks!
