Shakyhead worm fishing

Is anyone familiar with this method? I swear by plastic worm fishing for bass, it may not be the most fun way but it's always been the most productive method for me. I used to strictly use curly tail or the U-tail ZOOM series then my father turned me onto the finesse worms (also by ZOOM). Much different action but they have been working out very well for me. I use them on a 1/8oz slider jighead.

I've been reading a lot about this shaky head fishing and want to try it out, I'll be buying some of those jigheads soon. I watched a couple youtube videos and it seemed like they were trying to tell me to just let it hit the bottom and twitch the rod lightly giving the effect of the worm burrowing around on the bottom but staying in the same place. Is that how you do it? I'm used to slowly ticking the worm along the bottom but not leaving it in one place, on the bottom, and just twitching and waiting for a hit. Any tips/advice on tactics and brands is greatly appreciated by us all!

PS - I'm planning to hit JPP at Smith Springs about 5am Saturday morning and fish until about noon. If anyone in the plastic navy wants to join, let me know.

I only fish worms when nothing else works, and I only fish worms 2 ways.

Wacky - rigged stick baits. (Senko - type baits)
And Shakey Heads.

I use mainly the BBB Squirrel tail worm in 6"

I use 1/8 to 3/16 oz heads. I prefer Spot Remover pro. you can get them most places.

90% of the time I fish a worm it is a shakey head. I like the falcon K shakey, or the yum pumkin ed. I also fish larger worms than most people do on shakeys. I will fish 10" or 12" worms on a shakey head because of how the worm will stand straight up, I also like heaver heads 1/4 or bigger because of the worms I have some that are 1/2 oz or larger. If you want to fish a more traditional worm big bite baits makes a squirrel tail worm that is awesome. I also like to fish the cane tail worm they make on a shakey head. I like to shake the rod tip to make them worm dance I will let the worm sit in one spot and do it's thing. Also if you feel structure and then as soon as you come out of it I like to let it sit and shake it. It's a great method to fish. I would join you this weekend and try to help but I will be on guntersville pre fishing for next weekend tournament.

Hey guys, i was at BPS 2 nights ago and they have one of thier clearance/bargain bins going down the isle between the boats and boat seats and its full of all sorts of jigs including some shaky heads. all jigs in that bin are $0.99. some are 4 packs, some are 5 packs. Might not be the exact color ya want, but a black sharpie or nail polish should be a cheap color fix. i got some 1/8 oz and some 3/16 oz shaky heads. some might be the BPS brand, but its a good deal either way.
Just an FYI for you guys if ya need some new lead, they have other heads in there too if you want something else.

Man those clearance bins get me everytime I go in there haha. Just ordered some shakyhead jigs and worms from SHObaits. Never used their stuff before but it looks pretty legit and I had a gift card. I'll try it out in the next couple weeks and see how it goes. I'm good at plastic worm fishing so I'm sure I can pick up on this technique and make it work for me.

I have using the 4" black Gary Yamamoto Senko wacky rigged in the creeks lately. It has been out producing everything. But the bass are tearing it to pieces. Any other brands work as well?

I shakyhead fish a bunch on Old Hickory and it works great. For me it catches both numbers and size. I have caught a bunch over 5 lbs on this method.

I think the key is to balance your set up. Light tackle with a 1/16 or 1/8 oz head and a small worm or craw is great in the shallows (less than 10 ft deep). Heavier tackle with 1/4 and 1/2 oz heads and bigger worms in the deep. My preference is braid with a fluorocarbon leader, as it is super strong and super sensitive.

You can fish it just like any other worm or jig, but slow it down when it is in a good spot and shake it a bit. Usually, under-working it is better than over-working the worm. Adding scent is a huge plus as the fish get to look and smell it for a while.

A shakyhead is on one rod almost year around for me and it is most often the way most bass are caught in my boat.

There are advantages to specific worms and heads but all work. I use worms, craws and bush hogs at various times of the year and all work well. I like them to be small, soft and in green pumpkin.

Head on sale are great as you will lost some each trip. But you need to pitch it into the snags to catch fish.

I do not use Senkos. I use the Big Bite Baits Trick Stick. 25 pack for $6.99.
Yum Dingers are great, even the BPS stick baits work....

Also, use a wacky rigging tool. the tube with the rubber o-rings.

I have experienced the same as Jim being caught and/or lost numerous big bass on a shakyhead. Will also fish big worms on it as well but mainly I stick to the chiggercraw in green pumpkin.

My two most productive big bass baits are a Zoom Ole Monster and the Berkley Chiggercraw on the places I fish.

One thing I have found with fishing a shakey head is this: You can put any worm, craw or creature on it, and fish. I like the trick worms, but anything will work.

Just got my shakey head jigs and worms from SHObaits. I have to work this weekend but I'll definitely give them a shot next weekend. The worms are a carbon copy of the zoom finesse worms which I have a lot of confidence using. I've been reading different techniques with them. I think this is going to be fun!

Try set your hook baits. He has the best jigheads and shaky worm avalible. He goes to the flea market in Hendersonville and nashville.
