I went out this morning by myself again and what day this one was.It started real nice with little to no wind and partly cloudy sky but the bite was slow until the sun started coming above the trees. I made a 1/2 mile run up the lake from lock 3 ramp to a new spot near a big marina and the fish were there but the bite was slow to none. So I came back about a 1/4 mile to another spot where I know the fish were at and pick up my first 1.46lb LM bass and I know better then lip a bass with a crank bait in its mouth with me with the shakes. Yelp it happen me and the bass hook on the same bait and the hook in my little finger up to the bend in the hook. First I got the bass unhook and in the live well then cut the line and now try to get the hook out of my finger.I was going to take some pic's but that was the hand I held the camera with so that was out. I tried backing it out but it went deeper so I had to push it up and out so I could pinch the barb closed then get the hook out finally then tie it back on and go back to fishing. I caught the next LM bass on the next cast and it was a 1.21lb bass and I started to crank in fish one after another for the next hour and all on the #5 shad rap in black & silver on a fast retrieve. So till tomorrow.........................woody

OUCH! Woody, you,ve got to get a pair of Klein sidecutters on your boat! It's better to push the hook on through and then cut the hook off and back it out.
I had to do that to a fella on the Caney a coupla years ago. Waved me down and asked if I had a pair of side cutters on board. While unhooking a striper, it thrashed and he got a hook through his thumb.
He released the fish and pushed the hook on through but didn't have anything strong enough to cut through the big hook he was using. I always have a pair of side cutting pliers (actually three pair on my boat) and cut the hook, allowing him to back it out.
After washing the wound out with an alcohol swab and putting a bandage on his thumb, I watched him head out to finish fishing the rest of his trip. HARDCORE FISHERMAN !
I always have a stocked first aid kit in my boat, car, and motorcycle. It was the law in Germany and just got used to having it available.

Merv is dead on ... Bass Guide Rick McFerrin and I were taping a TWRA Tennessee Wildsides TV show with then, Line Backer Randall Godfrey of the Tennessee Titans ... Rick was prefishing that morning when a Crankbait treble hook that went through (almost) his index finger ... He cut the hook off of the bait ...Bound it in tape and we finished taping the show ... Now Rick is a Spin Cast Man ... He uses his Index finger to interfere with the line to pulse it ... Can you imagine the throb all day !! Rick was the chase boat with the Cameramen that was pretty much heading up the trip ... This was our second Taping ... the first Striper taping was a bust ...
I did not know this had happened and after everyone had left He came to me and wanted me to cut this hook out, I said Whoa.. You need to go to the ER He said you can do it ... I Did !! ...Rick is a trooper !!! ... Merv is right ... Grit your teeth and push it through and then cut the barb off and back it out ... ... Kline lineman pliers and large Dikes (diagonal plier cutters) will work for the smaller hooks ... I also carried probably one of the smaller pair of Bolt cutters on my guide boat for the 7/0 and 8/0 hooks I was using for Trophy stripers ... Klines and Dikes won't handle a Gamakatsu of this dimension.
Another note for being prepared ... I had a cabin on the Caney and know and fished it for two decades... I always in my canoe or River Hawk had these items ... A small WalMart cast net, a pair of thick welding gloves and a landing net ...
I have rescued Raccoons, All species of birds ... and other river mammals like River Ferrets from the debris of man ... If you fish these waters and especially now that yaking is gaining in popularity you will run into this especially in the backwaters, creeks and small rivers ... ...
These animals caught up in mono line and hooks ... When I found this I would capture the animal and at best try to subdue it to the point it would not bite me ... Now... I am a Viet Nam Veteran... I have seen action ... But I don't know what was worse ... That or trying to control a wild animal that is hurt, and traumatized ... Have you ever been close to a Ferrets Mouth or a Raccoons ?? Or a beak of a Red tail Hawk ...
I think I had a 90% release rate ... ( some had to be relieved with a .357 but it was better than a slow miserable, agonizing death, and I hated it !) All I could do was cut and remove hooks ... Spend the rest of the time to unravel the web of line and nets and at the same time get the Hell out of Dodge !! Which wasn't hard ... Most of the time I had to get my Big ass up the hill to save the animal but had no problem falling down the hill back to the water ... <'TK>< :)

Kudos to you TK. I have made a few rescues in my day, but none very dangerous. A hooked loon, a hooked gull, a bass caught in the plastic of a six pack. Like a good Boy Scout (one of which I never was!), it pays to be prepared for the unexpected.

Merv, We have both seen the wraith of war ... Which makes us love our fellow man more and the animals that dwell on this earth . The Eco System will take care of itself ... It has since the beginning of time ...
But most of us will intervene when man screws it up with factual evidence ... Mono and hooks is factual evidence !! Our outdoorsmen needs to be more conscientious with their waste ... Now I realize something's can't be controlled when it comes to fishing,. hang-ups and the everyday fishing hazards ... But we need as Patriarchs of the sport impress this upon the new comers and the youth .. ...
PS... I was a Boy Scout ... I made it to First Class ... Then those dadgum girls come along !!! :):):).... <'TK>< :)

Actually there has been around now for several years a better way to get a hook out. I have seen it done but not had it done to me. A guide on the White River got an XCalibur XT treble hook out from browntrout's finger using same method about 6 months ago. He was back fishing in only minutes and says there was no pain. The guide just had him look away and one jerk and it was out. fishingtn forum member and HOOK1 owner Chad Hoover has two good videos of how this works. Now on one of them he puts hook in his own leg to demonstrate....I ain't gonna do that...LOL.......but as you can see it works quite well. I don't want a hook in me period but I would go with the easy way out if it happens.

Nice fish, Woody and glad to hear you managed to get that hook out to keep on fishing.
I agree with Alpha; I'd rather use the line/jerk technique...had to do it once to my boss in Korea. He called me on my cellphone, asked me what part of the lake I was on and then came over with a treble hook in his thumb. He told me he had seen the technique in a video and that it would work...I was hesitant but it worked like a charm (thank goodness, with him being the boss and all LOL).

I know how to get them out because I have done it on someone else but when you are alone and its a crank bait with more then one hook and you shake. So I did what I had to do so I could get back to fishing and catch more bass........woody

I didn't know how many knew about that technique and I guess it would be hard to do that on yourself....I know I probably wouldn't try it. Haven't had a hook in me for many years now but I do remember that it hurts.

The "line/jerk" method of removing hooks is by far the least painfull, I've had to use it on myself 3-4 times over the years. I think the "surprise" is why it works so well..............

I no longer trust myself or the bass when I remove the hooks on a caught fish. I use this little device to hold the bass while I remove the hooks. Cost $10 at Academy.

I am with ya dude. I use Fish Grips to lip the fish, and needlenose on the hook. I catch too many dinks and they are the worst about floppin all over the place.

my favorite (NOT) is when you have one of those 6" yellow bass hooked and dangling nice and docile till you barely touch it to get a grip and every sharp spine and gill raker comes shooting up and out like a mix of porcupine and puffer fish slicing your hands and stabbing your palms! its funny too cause ya know they are gonna do it, its just a matter of who is gonna be quicker, you on the grab and squeeze of them on the flailing of all sharp appendeges they have! LOL....good times!
Luckily only been hooked once, and it was a stupid self inflicted injury. I was walleye fishing in michigans upper penninsula casting an original floater from the bank. well there was about 12'-15' of pencil reeds from the bank i was on out into the water so when the rapala got about 15' from shore, i would reel down and give it a quick yank to get over those reeds. that worked a few times until i finally got the trebles snagged. so i have my 6'-6" spinning rod in hand and about 10' of line to the lure and i started yanking up like a moron (yes i was younger and less educated), so im yanking up on my rod and POP goes the lure like a rocket, up in the air and behind me, me trying to counter-act that action, snap the rod forward causing the bull whip/fly cast motion sending 2 of the 3 trebles into the back on my head. a 30 minute drive to Sault St. Marie hospital, sitting in the ER with a 6" chartruese rapala hanging from of the back of my head. Needless to say, lesson learned!
People in there with broken bones and all kinds of nasty injuries, the nurse opens the door to the waiting room and hollers out "WHO'S GOT THE FISHING HOOK IN THE HEAD?". LOL, that was all the shameing in needed! LOL

TN Bronzeback, very funny story !!! Reminds me of a friend of mine in MI., drinking a few beers, sharpening hooks, and left a Rapala on the couch when he went to get a beer. Came back, sat down and YEP ! Fish On (sort of) . He lives alone, so he cuts the couch cushion up, drives to the ER, he said the nurses couldn't stop laughing.
