On September 24th we will be having the next kayak fishing event. We will be meeting at Jefferson Springs on Percy Priest at 1700, and start fishing at 1715, then turn in photos by 2000, back at the ramp.
Entry is optional, if you would like to compete it will be $10 to enter, and an optional $5 for big fish. (PLEASE BRING EXACT CASH)
If you just want to hang out and fish then afterward tell everyone you caught bigger fish, that's fine also.
You will use your longest two fish of the evening for a total score, and longest individual fish is for big fish.
The approved measuring device is the Hawg Trough carried by Hook1.
Artificial lures only, paddle craft only.

Could i bring my caney boat out sometime and take the outboard off just use the oars?

That is until i get a yak?

You can count me in. If you have a fancy kayak I can try out even better. I went and fished the smith springs area this afternoon because I thought that's where the event was going to be. I met someone from the website at the ramp. Sorry if you thought I was a bit weird, I know not to many people spark up a conversation by asking if you belong to a fishing website.

Jefferson Springs is less than a 10 minute drive from work so as long as nothing keeps me later than normal, I'm in this time.

Now this one I can make! And Travis, I believe any self propelled boat is eligible!

We are allowing phones for now, as long as we can clearly see the photo, identifier, and marks on the measuring device. As we go on things will get a little tighter, but for now we are just trying to get people introduced.

Yes.

Bring it Travis. I don't know if we will keep allowing jon boats, but for now you're good.

Thanks Jeremy. I just re read your earlier thread and offer for a ride plus I forgot about a backyard where a moken gets all the use now. :D

Don't know if time will work since the wife gets home around 6 but i would like to try an OH one sometime.

This area of the lake tends to look really nasty after heavy rains, literally the entire area looking like coffee with cream added. It's not like the North side of the lake that stays clear after rain but just rises. Let's hope we get the normal color water! I'm looking forward to meeting some more people from this forum.

Also, in the early Spring before water levels rise back up, I like to walk way down the bank at this area after work and fish until dark exclusively with watermelon color flukes and I don't think I've ever been skunked. I've got an area that is just stacked with 10-15" bass that time of year. Don't know about this time of year but I don't think it would be much different as we're entering Fall. Should be a some good fishing!

I think we have to get TK to approve that since it's his site but I'd put one on my yak, that would be a great way to meet each other anytime on the water when we spot one another.

Morning guys,

So I would assume some type of black light will be needed for fishing on the night of the 24th since we are fishing till 8pm? or do you guys think it will not be dark enough by then?

jad2t
09-17-2013, 08:33 AM
It's definitely dark by 8pm so you'll need a light for safety. Not sure about a black light though. I have a very bright headlamp that I'll be wearing. I also have a nifty and cheap DIY kayak light that if I remember I'll bring to show. It costs about 12 dollars and can be seen from quite a ways.

Reel Tune
09-17-2013, 09:20 AM
No black light needed, just a white light that can be seen from 360 deg. I can bring one for you to use if needed. Just let me know.

Jeremy,

I think you mentioned that you have extra Hawg Troughs if someone wants to borrow one for an event. Can I borrow one?

Well I really don't need one. I have two measuring devices already but I wanted to borrow one for the event rule. I guess if I have to I'll buy one. How much?

Reel Tune

They are listed for $16.99 on the site.

Thank you TK, that's really nice of you. We've been having about 12 people show to each event.

Ok I'll write you a check if that's alright.

If you could purchase one online, and call the shop after you order it and just have Chad bring it to me that would work best. Or call the shop before you order it and ask for a code for free shipping for your Hawg Trough, and then have Chad give it to me and I'll bring it for you.

What is a decent camera you guys are using?

We've been allowing people to use their phones as long as the identifier can be seen and marks on the measuring board can be clearly seen also. If you do have a digital camera that's usually better. As for now with less than 12 people entering it's not too hard to judge by just looking at phones.

Ha, ha, ha. I've got some paper that says I have a bank account also, but as for money that's almost non existant.

I will have a sticker on my with my screen name from here

I'll be looking for ya.

I'm using my camera phone, it's a Galaxy S3 and it's a pretty good camera.

I'm using the Gallaxy S3 also, decent camera on it. It will work, you may want to take several pictures of each fish and keep the best one. It's not easy getting a good picture of a fish in a kayak on a measuring board. Close quarters combat, almost.

It is on the left and can be easy to miss. If you cross the bridge over the lake, you have gone too far.

Last night we had our best turnout yet out of Jefferson Springs on the upper end of Percy Priest. Fifteen Anglers and three guys who didn’t fish showed up to check it out. Everything ran smoothly and everyone was on the water by 1715, and off by 2000 just as planned. All the lights on the water from the kayaks was awesome to see. We had our first lady angler, some new faces along with five or six regulars who have made it to every event. We had three or four cancel with things that had popped, maybe afraid of getting wet, or having a female out fish them? The weather started off great and then around 1900 the rain/drizzle settled in.

Coming in 3rd place was Ron Champion with 26” and taking home $22.50, and there was a tie for 1st place with 27.25”. The tie was between Craig Dye, and Sarah Meier, and the tie breaker was the largest fish and that was by Craig Dye with a 15” largemouth. Craig ended up taking big fish overall and 1st place with a total of $155 which is the best purse yet. Sarah Meier took 2nd place with her best of two fish being 14”, and taking home $37.50.

Congratulations to all anglers who participated, and we have something new. We have a HAWG BOUNTY that is currently at $75 and will continue to grow with each HAWG TROUGH purchased at the events. The way to win this HAWG BOUNTY is be the first to catch a 20”+ Black Bass in one of these events.

There were 16 fish caught for a total of 190.25”, and total monies paid out was $215.

1st Craig Dye
2nd Sarah Meier
3rd Ron Champion
4th Scott Fuji
5th Jonathan Handley

I did not know I placed 5th, It was a rough night last night but I had fun. I am looking forward to fishing some more events it was definitely a test of patience for me on Learning to fish effectively out of a kayak. Next time I am learning to stand up and fish........ I'm just going to make sure it's in shallow water. I am game for any events around middle lake or southern areas of priest.

Yeah Jonathan you placed 5th, I cleaned up my spreadsheet today and I'm keeping a lot of stats for every event to see what works best.

Guys that didn't catch anything, don't feel bad because I didn't get a bite. To me it's not about catching fish and winning money, it's about making friends, and having fun. I'm trying to do these events as relaxed and fun as possible. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to shoot them my way.

I'll send you my snail mail TK.

OK you asked for it.

So here it is

The next event is Tuesday October 8th at Station Camp Creek on Old Hickory. We will have registration at 5p, I'll be there earlier, and launch at 5:15p and check in at 8pm
130 Douglas Bend Road
Gallatin, TN 37066 36.34809, -86.514432
Best two black bass, Hawg Trougs will be available for sale
Entry $10, optional Big Fish $5
We're putting a seperate bounty on a Hawg the only speculation is you have to use a HAWG TROUGH
