Color depends on Manufacturer, Sierra put out a High $$ Gray vinyl ... It was in three layers that gave a lot of trouble the inner line would collapse when the barbed fittings from the connectors and pump bulbs and stop fuel flow ...
(This problem drove me nuts for about a day before I figured it out !!)
Now as how long they have been out ? ... Remember when a fuel line at WalMart jumped from $17.95 to $39.95 and then to $52. 95 ... I think they have come down some .... Since about 2008 ... The bulbs have also tripled in price ...
If any one needs to make some fuel lines up I have bulk 3/8 Industrial Paint system hose ...Impervious to Ethanol, Lacquer, MET, etc. For $2.50 per foot .
