View Full Version : Interesting day on the Caney

Got in the water today just after 6am and tried for rockfish. I know it's too late at that point, I meant to get up earlier but really wasn't feeling it when the alarm went off at 3am. I eventually gave up and kayaked way upstream and floated back catching numerous stocker size brook and rainbow trout. No size to speak of. Then in about 10 feet of water I noticed a tackle box...and a pocket knife, tshirt, and fishing rod. Looks like someone dumped their canoe or kayak and lost some gear. Very unfortunate but I wasn't about to let that stuff sit there. I retrieved the rod pretty easily but the tackle box was hard since it was in such deep water. I reeled my rooster tail all the way to the tip of my fishing rod and when I was positioned just right, was able to stick it down in the water and hook onto one of the latches on the box! It's a small clear box and had a handful of useful Caney lures in there.
At the end of the day, another interesting thing happened. I set the hook while trout magnet twitching and it was my first walleye ever. Keeper size too at 18" so it's going to be cooked tomorrow. Middle of the day catching a walleye totally on accident. I wish I could have brought home some nice sized trout too but oh well. I haven't been on that river in 4 months so it was great to be back. Can't wait to do it again.
Just in case that gear belongs to one of the members on here, if you can tell me the brand names of the rod and reel that was lost, I'll gladly return it to the rightful owner. Otherwise, I just got some free stuff :D

Nice! and congratulations on the fish.
I'll go first. Shimano 2500 w/ Shimano Crucial spinning rod. :D. Tackle box clear w/ lot's of good Caney fishing lures.
I found a pistol in the river a long time ago. Saturday Night Special. I turned it in cause it was under a bridge.

A friend of mine rescued 2 guys on the Caney the other day. They sank their Riverhawk while dragging an anchor. Very strange thing was that he rescued 2 people from the exact same place years earlier. Be careful out there!!!

Good thing your friend was there. I have never understood the dragging anchors or chains. It does slow you down but it can be dangerous and no way its as stealth as just floating along. To each their own I guess.

that is exactly what i was thinking, man you could do better to slow you down just by using the trolling motor, it is a lot more sthealtier than dragging anything, floating would be better but sometimes the increased flow would mess up your presentation, but I rather have a less than ideal presentation but be present at home at the end of the trip in one piece!!

I lost a penn rod paired with a shimano reel (I can't remember the specific models)... My dad lost a tackle box like the one I posted in the picture. We flipped our kayaks together a few months back.

I believe we crossed paths Saturday. I was fishing the big pool above the riffle when you went up stream looking for rockfish, and hooked a rainbow on a brown rooster tail just as you passed back down stream. Had another on when you launched to paddle up stream.

Yes we did! And I remember you mentioning that people have caught walleye there recently and my exact words were "I'd love to catch one because I hear they taste so good but if I did it would be on accident."

I was just talking to agelessone today about walleye fishing. Have a friend of friend that is suppose to teach me to fish for them in the cumberland in Carthage. Caught a couple saugers up there recently.
Does anyone know if you can get a bass boat in at the campround below the center hill dam when they only have sluece on?

I came close to dumping my 16' jon out there on Saturday! We put in right as the generation was starting like we usually do - but the additional water from the sluice created some serious waves when it hit the shallow flat in front of the ramp. It quickly tapered off but my timing could not have been worse catching the initial force.
After the first bend another guy said he almost had a catastrophe from anchoring.

This looked peaceful - but less than 5 minutes later it was chaotic!

Yea anchoring during generation is definitely not a smart move

If you want to do that, you'd have to get the boat in the water before the generation starts otherwise it would be quite a challenge with that water moving fast.

Actually that was Friday not Saturday. Long weekend! Anyways, I don't even own an anchor I've had enough close calls without them.

You can with the minimum 250 running, but you have to be careful with your trailer tires falling off the ramp. On the other side, the ramp is plenty long, but pretty shallow. The front tires of your vehicle will need to be well into the water. With 1 generator or more, you can launch at the campground without a problem, just a little current. I have launched on 3 gens and sluicing without an issue.

Running 11,500 cfs was a cake walk launching and loading my bass boat by the campground but that was no sluice all gens. The water gets pretty choppy once the gate is added to the mix.
If you are wanting to just fish the pond at the Dam then you probably can launch there on only a gate but fishing that area while its going could be tricky. Floating downstream after launching on a sluice you have better know the river and its bars. I wouldn't do it in mine unless its at least a generator going and even then there are skinny areas.

Yeah, I've gotten into some sticky situations fishing the caney in my boat, put in in Gordonsville ramp one time and floated down, went over some real shallows. Didn't even think about getting back up, we barely made it with both of us out of boat and pushing/pulling it up river. Caught several rainbows but did not think we were getting back to ramp.
From what I understand the fishing is not good when generating and should go before or after???

Fishing is good during generation if you're looking for bigger trout. You'll catch fewer fish but larger. I've had luck for larger trout wading high but falling water in early evening.

If you have the means..then fish it on 1-2 generators. You have a misunderstanding from someone's info. ;)
I prefer not to fish out of a boat on low water unless it is only a means of transportation between spots. I like to wade so I tend to lean on low water but when there is water I would definitely fish it.

ok, so looking at fishing the caney this week when generating, would you fish pond or float down? what would be good baits and presentations?

Definitely stay clear of the pond area during generation for at least the next few weeks since sluice flow will greatly increase during generation making it dangerous to be there.
If you take your boat and float the high water throw stickbaits with patterns of trout. Smithwick rattlin rogues work great too, chrome with the blue or black back.

jimmy, you're talking all chinese to me, no idea what these baits are? I know soft and hard bait but stickbait???

Some refer to them as jerkbaits, some say stickbaits. Check out the rattlin rogue lures and you'll see what I'm referring to. Those work great in the Caney for larger brown trout as do any type of hard jerkbait in a trout pattern. I have a yozuri rainbow trout pattern lure that has worked well for me in the past.

Floating in these. Suspending in rogues.
I personally want suspending in all if its available. The last thing i want to have happen when a big brown is tailing my bait is for the bait to rise on a pause. Natural forage doesn't rise. If your constantly moving it then its not as much of an issue.
