Went to the Caney to try out a new lure.I was there to catch big trout and the first cast I thought I had one.Turned out to be a stripe about 15" long. The very next cast I almost got the rod jerked out of my hand and with that I knew I had one of those big browns. No way, when it got close ,another stripe but this one would not hardly go in the net. Finally after another hour of fishing I was able to catch a brown that was around 20".
I was fishing near dam and when they started to gen, there were around 5 or 6 kayaks waiting to fish "the pond".Someone on loudspeaker advised those folks to move down river. The sleuce came on and it was blowing out a lot of water.
After this took a nap and went back to river and fished a few hours and had a good day catching 52,mostly small, trout. That included three gorgeous hard fighting brooks.
The colors I used were white and pink TM's under the float. If I did not have a bad eye I should have had another 25 to 30.
Very thankful to fish the Caney.I will say that the river is not as good as it has been.

Nice job Ed.

Your last sentence has been the underlying thoughts of a lot people who have fished it for a while.

You fish the float method a lot, do you ever use the "slip float" option in deep water as opposed to just pegging it like say for casting out into a generation flow?

Nice job!

I fished and floated the Caney out of my kayak yesterday too. It was a great day. I had plenty of browns and rainbows nailing the my rooster tails.

The funny thing, though - my retrieve speed seemed to have little effect. Either they were on or off.

I had my fly rod but chickened out, as usual...

Ok, by now I guess I've been in TN long enough to where I should know this but by "stripe" are we talking striper or white bass?

Well as always that depends where you are at. Down at Pickwick white bass have been called Stripes ever since the dam was created....in 1938. But as more and more new comers are moving there one is not sure what a guy means when he says he caught a "Stripe".....so I have begun to ask if he means white bass or striper. Twelve years ago I did not have to ask. ......times change I guess.

So can you actually fish the Caney without being swept away? I have waded the Caney before only to have to leave early due to rising water and swift current.

You can wade when they are not generating.Go here and pull down Center Hill dam and see what the schedule will be next day.Usually post next day around 1500 hours.Or you can call 1-800-238-2264 and when it answers put in the number 4 and then the number 37 for Center Hill Dam.
Once they quit generating the water will be okay at Buffalo Valley in around an hour. The water will come up quickly at Buffalo Valley,30 minutes at Lancaster area, and about 1 1/2 hours at Happy Hollow.
I never go without knowing the schedule.
Now that they are sleucing around 250 CFS it is ideal for fishing.

I hope they keep the sluice running during no generation up through the weekend! I'm fishing it Friday night and again Saturday morning out of my kayak and would love to spend most of my time in the pond area fishing the waterfalls and that 250 cfs discharge. I also want to fish first thing Saturday morning, if there's no generation.

took me a while to get used to. I moved to Tennessee in 1985. Before that I lived in Texas. They were called Sand Bass down there.
