I was wondering if you guys new an effective way to slow your kayak when fishing shallow rivers like the caney or clinch. I read somewhere that dragging a folded chain wrapped iin gorilla tape works and doesn't get hung on the bottom. Is there a better way or perhaps a product available for this application. Thanks

That's probably the most common method. A variation is to use a bicycle inner tube to cover the chain, and zip ties to secure the chain in the inner tube. Midtnkayakangler uses a retractable dog leash to attach the chain to his kayak. Be sure the leash is a cord-style, a ribbon style will be affected by the moving water and twist, vibrate, etc. I think Harbor Freight has a heavy duty 25' leash, whereas most other ones are 16' in length.

I have been using the chain and dog leash on my Coosa for over a year and a half with no problems. I use a double section of chain taped up with Gorilla Tape....on a 26 foot dog leash...the leash is the cord and not the tape style. When the Caney is not generating I can just stop at the top of a riffle....drop the chain and come to a complete stop and park on the fish.....pretty good way to fish. HOOK1 sells a 3 foot parking pole for rivers. I have not used the 3 footer but I do know that it works well. But the drag chain is hard to beat......use it to park or just slow you down while drifting.

How does it perform during generation? Is it a noticeable difference? Thank you for the replies so far.

Never dropped it during generation. I have fished the Caney before during generation. It is hard for me to keep my kayak under control while fighting a fish with that much current so I just gave up on that. I am sure there are many who have the skills to fish it and keep control but I am not one of them.
