Cheatham Lake

Headed down to Cheatham Lake tomorrow; my coworker's bass club is having an open tournament. Should be interesting because my coworker doesn't like Cheatham...he says all the times he's fished it, he's never done any good. I've been looking at Google maps to try to find any likely spots and have a few I'm going to try to talk him into trying. I hope I come back with a positive report!

Cheatham isn't bad for bass. I'm actully about to post up a few pics from just off the cumberland in Ashland City. Don't overlook the area where you put in though. There are all kinds of docks and cover between there and the river!

Well, it was like my coworker said...no one in his bass club likes fishing Cheatham Tough fishing all the way around. Between him and myself, we caught around 30 fish but not ONE keeper LOL.
We started out in Sycamore creek and went up that a ways, fishing top water. Nothing. Then, I wanted to fish the Harpeth River because I saw some good rock bluffs on Google Maps so we went there and fished from the mouth till the end of the big rock walls...nothing. Beautiful scenery though (attached pics). I had really thought that early in the morning we would catch some fish along those rock walls. Boy was I wrong.
We then went back out to the main lake and fished deep with big worms, caught some small ones. Then we went into an inlet and started fishing in the shade and started catching spots and LM, but could not get a keeper. Came back down the lake and fished a rock wall almost across from Sycamore Creek; I was using a watermelon/pepper ultra-vibe speed craw on a 1/8 oz. shaky head jig and they were nailing it but again, no keepers. The tournament was won by a guy bringing in ONE fish that was 16 inches. We tried almost everything; frogs, poppers, buzzbaits, crankbaits, 10" worms, jigs, finesse worms, Senkos...just about all our fish were caught on shaky head (my partner) or the speed craws (me). Tough day fishing but that Harpeth River sure is scenic; that scenery and the beautiful weather made it a good day out on the water.

Great looking scenery. When only one fish wins a tournament you know it was a tough day for fishing.

Sorry for the bad day but it sure is nice to be out trying.

Most all the people I knew that did well in the Cheatham Lake tourneys would head out of the launch then go all the way to OH Dam fishing up there. They'd fish the creek/river mouths along the way but nothing more than a cast-cast-cast go type thing.

I hear you about the Harpeth river. Beautiful but difficult fishing. Not sure why but I can't believe it doesn't have better fishing. Every time I fished it we struggled and got maybe one keeper. Strange for such a beautiful place

It's all good; the weather was nice and I got to see and fish some new waters.

I'm still shaking my head about getting skunked in the Harpeth though...
