Pond on the Caney 06-14-2013

Took MidTNKayakAngler's advice and headed for a cool stream. They had two generators going as I put in and did not really expect to catch trout with the water that deep in the Pond....plus the trout would have most likely been hanging in and around the current. But the Pond is always good for fish. I paddled up to the waterfall and started fishing. It was cool and the waterfalls in front of me made for a great day. I was the only kayak in there. There was a boat fishing the boils. The only fish I caught were bluegill and crappie.....but it was either one or the other on almost every cast. Tried over where the wing wall meets the wall in front of sluice thinking maybe would get into some other specie....but it was same there....stacked with crappie and Gills. Went back over to the waterfall and finished up. The Gills were not big but are very chunky and really colored nice. The crappie were all 11 to 12 inch fish and healthy. Spent 3 hours kayaking and catching fish on a very cool body of water. When got back close to the ramp just slid off kayak into water up to my thighs....sure felt invigorating. Had lunch and a late afternoon snack at Big Rock Deli. Joel was doing a lot of business and selling kayaks....LOL. All of Big Rocks canoes....kayaks....were booked for today. The other outfitter was booked up too. So I imagine it looked like a navy up there today. Already made arrangements for my future trips to float with Big Rocks shuttle service. All in all a great day.

Yeah....twitching the Bison. But.....I threw some Rapala UL cranks also.The fish did not want them. I use other baits......I will post when I catch using them also. I am into tungsten jigs but the company that made them took a bunch of folks money and ran. I used a 5mm jig head with a TM body that was deadly in deeper water....and also caught a ton of Gills on a tungsten Wooly Bug. But now I can't find anyone that sells them. There are a ton of tungsten ice jigs but the ones I used were the shape and style of a round head jig.

Very nice report and pics there Alpha!!, I tought getting in the pond with two generators runnning was a little on the dangerous side isn't it??, the day I fished the Caney with Roy he took me close to the dam and man there was a lot of boils that would surely swamp my little Riverhawk, they had two genetaors running that day with no sluice, do you stay close to the wall on the left side ? or more towards the middle, did the have the sluice open or was it just the 2 generators?
very nice scenery on the pics, even my daughter commented on "how pretty the fishy pictures and all the stuff around" Lol!!

No I don't go on the Pond if they are sluicing......meaning more than 150 or 200 CFS. If you stay on the left side of the wing wall it is not dangerous at all. The water was as calm as a lake. If they are sluicing even the 150 CFS there will be a little current that could pull you back to the sluice.....but that is no problem as long as you are aware of where you are at.....and stay out from back in there. Some fish back inside that wall but I don't. But with two gens running it is hard to catch trout in the Pond. But I wanted to go as it had been a while since I had been on the Caney.....and even though it was a bit warm the breeze picking up the cold off the water made it nice. Thanks for your comments.

What depth would you say those fish were at?

They were about 10-14 feet down. I was using a 1/24 ounce jig head....SOS 2# test mono....and counting down one one thousand until I counted down to 30. That is my best guess. They were down deep....and I never hung bottom.

Man...that is getting down there with the TM. I have been practicing on deeper water with the different style CM heads and TM bodies. Thanks again man.

Yeah they have been there since I have been fishing it....4 or 5 years now anyway. Sometimes you can get some really big Gills but even the smaller ones are always very thick. The Caney holds nice crappie all down the river. When I am floating it during no generation I stop at all the deep holes to see if they hold crappie. If they do and are biting you can see them follow the bait up and inhale it....that's pretty neat to see.
