Started out fishing Blue Cat and did not get so much as a tap. Since I had already dirtied my car headed over to Shell Cracker. Proceeded to catch a ton of black crappie between 7 and 9 inches. They were so black they were purple.....beautiful fish. What struck me as odd was not a single Gill caught in either lake. Granted I was sitting in one spot but they should be all over the area this time of year. One man came in with a limit of Gills....albeit all of them were 6 inches long.....caught on crickets. Had I been in the kayak maybe I would have found some. But the Gills were noticeably absent at Nickajack yesterday also. Took the kayak down there yesterday to try out my new 8 foot parking pole from HOOK 1.....works great by the way.....and yes it does float. Caught over 30 huge crappie but no Gills at all....and I went all over that bay. Oh....did not bring a single crappie home....it was catch and release yesterday only. Have to take nephew down there tomorrow and next week also. On the bodies of water I fish the Gill bite is overdue. Maybe next week.

Alpha, I don't how much you fish where I ran into you at the other day. But if you go across into the lake to that island you guys were facing when you were fishing. There is a nook on that side where the bottom goes from big rock to pea gravel to silt and runs about 6-8ft deep in the back where the pea gravel is. That is good place to fish around spawn and post during summer water comes up the crappie get into there.
Its sheltered too from a south wind.

Thanks Travis. I am going to make a good effort to try and find some good Gills on JPP in the next couple of months....and crappie also. I just have not given JPP a good shot.

No problem. We caught several that day on the mud bank side. The water was slapping it good creating a mudline about 3ft off the bank and the gills were just on the edge of it. They spit up worms in my livewell before we let them go. None were big but fun to catch none the less.
