Sportsman Advice Needed on a NON-Sportsman Question

OK Guys, I need your thoughts here.

I accepted a job in Nashville in December, moving from northern Ohio:D:D

This winter I've commuted to the office (Grassmere Park area) and looked for homes.

Sold my house this week, so now I NEED TO MAKE A DECISION . . .

I've looked at most of the entire Nashville metro area, and I ain't kidding:


Wilson County (Mt. Juliet)
Williamson County (Franklin)
Sumner County (Hendersonville)
Murfreesboro
Kingston Springs


You get the picture. Most of my kids are grown and gone or in college, but we had a mid-life "change in direction" and also have one in 4th grade, so schools continue to be very important.

We've been looking for homes in the $200 (+- $35) range with as much property as we can get. Lots of places come up in searches, but they are selling very quickly. I'll be in town next week to buy, no delay; pull the trigger, cash in hand. Looking for a commute no further than 28 miles.

I firmly believe hunters and fishermen can be trusted to know what another hunter and fisherman would want without too much debate, so please chime in with any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations.

Will be a full time Volunteer as of July 1 at the latest.

I live close to Hendersonville and it is nice...BUT... given where you are driving to the office and the fact you hunt/fish/probably have lots of family out of town I would say around Mount Juliet. It's close to both Percy & Old Hickory lakes, close to the airport, close to Nashville and has really grew a lot in the last 10 years so schools should be no issue.

The further away from Nashville you get the cheaper property will get for the most part. I have heard from several people that the housing market around Nasvhille is on fire right now so if you do find one you like I wouldn't sit on it too long.

I bought in Murfreesboro because I've lived there for most of my life, but when I start looking again, I'm going to Mt. Juliet. Franklin has the best schools and city services, but is more expensive than other areas IMO.

No question, Hendersonville. A quick commute using Briley Parkway. Go to www.realtracs.com (http://www.realtracs.com) and you can isolate home searches by county along with all the other parameters you are looking for.

I grew up near/in Mt.Juliet I can honestly say it is a great town. If your wanting land you would probably need to be one the east side towards Lebanon or the south side near Gladeville(where i lived). You would still have easy access to both JPP and OH and upper stones river.

I was born and raised in Lebanon,Tn. Great place to live and raise kids I have 4. The schools are great and improving with the new high school and middle school. Can be on the Caney Fork in 30 mins And to Nashville in 30 mins or less.

Hendersonville x2 or Sumner county side of Goodlettsville. great schools fairly easy commute

Hendersonville no doubt. Great schools, hardly any crime. Growing daily. I drive to Brentwood daily 45 minute trip.

I moved here (Goodlettsville) two years ago. Nice place, nice community. But if I had to do it again, I'd go to Mt Juliet.
Closer to J Percy Priest for fishing, good schools, low crime rate, cheaper priced homes.

We've been looking earnestly at Goodlettesville and Mt. Juliet. We really hope for some acreage so are looking south too.

I hear horror stories about the I-24 commute, but I may be a contributor to it soon. Our house is sold, so we'll be transplanted July 1st.

I've lived in Mt Juliet for 6 plus years, with 12 and 7 year old girls. We really like it her and dont plan on moving. Schools are very good and the town is great for many reasons. The best location for JPP, Old Hickory lake, caney fork and centerhill. Good luck to you.

Thanks much guys. We bought a house on an acre in Mt. Juliet. We'll be there June 25. Can't say enough about the forum! We looked everywhere, and I'm confident we'll be happy with our decision.

Now for a boat suggestion: I'm seriously considering leaving my 265 Albemarle Sportfisherman at my sister's house on Lake Michigan. It seems like far too much boat for OH and the Cumberland. She's a great heavy sea boat, with lots of deadrise, displacement and horsepower.

However, I think my 14' Old Town composite square-stern canoe, with 4hp engine will be just fine.

Am I crazy or should I stick with my Albe?

Definitely stick with the canoe. Your other boat would be OK on JPP but lots of shallow spots could cause you grief.

I used to fish out of a 16' Coleman canoe with three HP on a lake in Illinois that had people telling me I was crazy. Me and the wife never had a problem.

You just have to use some smarts and not go out in30 mph winds!

I am a Wilson County resident and Mt. Juliet is where you need to go, it is called land between the Lakes!

I grew up in mt Juliet and me and my parent's loved it. I plan on moving back there in the next few years. I live a few minutes from where you're going to be working, I was glad to see it wasn't on your list of places to move as it is very high crime area. Congratulations on becoming a Tennessean!
