My son and I fished Nickajack. It was the first day we fished together since November of last year......when my knee went. That part of the trip was a huge success....always good to fish with your son. My last report on Nickajack was November 9th.....and that day caught a lot of crappie. Yesterday we were not so fortunate. The crappie have moved into the bays I would assume staging for spawn. We only caught 3 fish...but they were the typical big crappie out of Nickajack. One of my fishing buddies down there showed up and stopped to talk and ask me what had happened to me.....they had thought the worse knowing I fished it 3 or 4 times a week for the crappie. He left and went to find one of the other ones that fished with us and he came by and spent two hours talking to me and my son. Then he left to go tell another one that I was OK. They now have my phone number to keep a check on me...LOL. Just thought that was pretty neat......fishing friends do have a unique bond. During all this getting reacquainted they gave me the 411 on the crappie. The bite in the bays started March 1st and was awesome for 3 weeks....then the last cold snap sent them back out away from the banks. They had been catching fish 3 to 4 feet out from the banks....as was the case last year. This year they are catching some really big fish....told me each day of a limit several hit the 2 pound mark...and the others are running one and a half pounds. Their opinion that with the upcoming warm weather the rest of the week they will move back to the bank. I caught one Shell Cracker and only a few Gills. When removing these fish from the hook felt like I was grabbing an ice cube. Did not get a temp reading. It will probably be next week before I go back.....want to give them time to get up on the bank. Plus...should have my new kayak and parking pole by then. The water depth where the fish will be is only 5 to 6 feet deep....so can park quite easily and stay on the fish. My buddies also showed me where the Shell Crackers spawn. We also stopped and checked on the Stripe and hybrids below the dam. While a few are being caught they have not yet come to the dam in big numbers yet. The weather was great....my new knee did OK and it was a nice trip.....life is good!

Alpha, I am sure those buddies had two prayers. One that you were still alive and another one that you would stay away and not catch all the fish in the river.
Good to know that you are out and about again.
BTW, My wife and another couple had breakfast at Puckett's in Columbia this AM. They wanted to sight see. I took them to the lakes at Williamsport. I have never been and wanted to scout it out. I will be returning soon with fishing gear. The lady in the office was super nice and informative. Can't wait to fish there.
We continued on to Cuba Landing and finally to Jackson before returning home. I never realized that one could cross the Duck River so many times in one day.
It is difficult to be near that much water and not wet a line.

I live in Columbia and didn't even know Puckett's was open yet...LOL! The water is still cold at Williamsport. Surely in a week or so it will warm a little. I have stuck close to home except for yesterday as my son wanted to go to Nickajack. I made the trip OK so am ready to venture further. Myself and tcintn are hoping to get back to Nickajack soon....and I have a nephew that is off from work and he wants to go down there too. But it's just not been good fishing at my spots close to home. Hope that changes soon.
