I know Marrowbone is deep and cold. Does anyone know if the trout holdover in there? If not how long they could possibly survive?

Reading back through old threads while researching the place i read that someone caught them in July while bream fishing.

The springs keep the lake pretty cool i imagine.

I have been told by the guy who used to run the bait shop there they have had trout weighed in during summer around 5lbs from catfishing. Not a lot but it has happend. The TWRA has stocked it for at least 7 years now and the lake is 30ft deep or so plus being spring fed. I did speak to a lady this weekend who said some will hold over but not a lot and they have some that get weighed in 1-2lbs every year.

Not sure if the guy from a couple years ago is a part of the same group as the lady because I think it changed over after the vandalism. So she may not have the knowledge base or he could have been pullin my leg. Not sure.

Its deep and has to be cool so there is that chance if any hold over that the large ones should.....being they are more hardy.

Just getting some ideas for another type of fishing. I've only been there 3-5 times and struck out every time. Now I'm getting some ideas, and think I know how I will attack this place. 65lb braid, and 8' rod rated for baits up to 8oz:D

I threw my 8" Hudd a bunch Saturday, but had no takers.
The water temp was 44 degrees though. I think once it gets closer to 50 there might be something to that.

You are reading my mind. 8"&6" Hudds, Lunker Punkers, and Castaic's. I would think there have to be some lunkers in there.

I pretty much gave up on Marrowbone last year. I've caught the odd trout, many sunfish, lots of catfish, and maybe 10 bass there (including the one in my avatar) -- thing is, if you're targeting bass it's a lot of work for very little action. There are far too many high action waterways to waste time there (though I would consider bringing kids for the sunfish).

I wonder if the constant stocking of trout has adversely affected the bass fishing. I've chatted with old timers who insist it used to be a prime bass lake.

You're not targeting the right bass. I think these bass are going to be tough to break, but I'm sure there are some real lunkers that have a high protien diet. It might even be many trips with not a fish, but I think there are a few in there that may be able to meet the requirements for a replica mount, or a great enlarged photo with a DSLR. I think they are there, it's just a matter of putting in the hours for that one fish, and having the right tools to do it. Not many will put in the time to catch a big bass, they want numbers. I enjoy catching, but it's getting to the point where I want that real trophy, and they don't come easy.

I'd say now through end of April would be a good time to try for the big mama's. Before they get on the bed and while the trout are there during the pre-spawn feeding binge. Trust me as long as the place has been stocked they know when the dinner bell is ringing.

For tageting them on Huds or other big trout lures, I wouldn't cast them along the banks like a rapala. What I would do is graph the deep hole there and slow troll it around the break line into that deep spot then zig zag across only focusing on the edge, bottom of it or structure in it.

Heck, grab a 6/0-8/0 circle hook and live bait a stocker trout while they are there in the same fashion saving yourself the $40 hudd. Just remember its trophy hunting and you won't shoot that Boone & Crockett white tail every trip in the woods.

Caught a limit of trout at the Bone again today. Had four fish the first hour, then lost the next 8 hookups, had about a dozen strikes with no hookup. For three hours I couldn't put a fish in the boat. Then in about 15 minutes, three hookups, three more fish in the boat. Oh, the first fish of the day was a crappie caught over thirty feet of water, fishing a spinner in the top three feet. All fish caught on no.1 Panther Martins, silver or gold blades.

Have you ever fished those panther martins with a stinger hook with a corn kernel on it? Someone said this works great on Telico.

@troutfiend, no I haven't, but after today's experience with the no. 12 trebles on the small spinners, I will be attaching a no. 10 treble stinger hook to the rear hook of the spinner.

I'll probably just use a yellow crappie nibble to the rear hook.
