Dakota, Thanks for the post and memories ... You know a lot of people read all of my exploits in fishing, Commercial, Tourney, and Guiding and working at the TVA Gallatin Steam Plant, and Military ... And my early days as a kid fishing with my Dad In SC for the first land locked Stripers .... (Now here it comes) ... By the way My Dad worked for the US Gov... And I have lived in every State in the South and attended 15 schools before graduating from High school ..

I use to live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Hargrove Rd., And fished the Black Warrier River ... I attended Tuscaloosa High School and Paul Byant Jr. was one of my class mates.

The Black warrier in 1959 thru 1962 when I lived there was nothing more than a enviromental industrial Trash Dump !!! ... The first time I saw an 8 Gauge Perm mounted Shotgun was on work boats to shatter the dried asphalt from the water line of barges ...

I first learned to water ski on the Black Warrier in 1962 behind a 14 foot Lone Star powered by a 40 HP Westbend outboard (later to become Chrysler) ... After a day of Sking ... When we got home we had to take Kerosene and clean our legs from our knees down to remove the asphalt oil paste that was floating on the surface ... Stripers then were unheard of ... Not sure that I remember the Dam ... I know stripers had not been introduced in the Black Warrier yet..

But great for the State of Alabama That they have improved their Eco system and cleaned up their act !!! And the results is a beautiful fish like this ...

PS... Before moving to Tuscaloosa I lived in Bessemer, Ala. and attended Hueytown Jr. High School Played Offensive Lineman for the Hueytown Gophers !!! :eek: ... On the way home we would walk, after football practice (since we missed the bus**) by Bobby Allison's Race Shop and hang on the chain Link Fence ... He would see us and come and talk to us ... A really nice guy ... I really felt sorry for him when he lost his two sons a year apart decades later ...

** The school bus drivers were Senior High School Students (We thought they were GODS !!) ... The bus's were 1955 Fords ... all seats were filled ..three to a seat and kids standing from the front to rear holding on to the above hand rails ... You have never seen a bus lean so much with these drivers and the winding back hill roads ... The drivers thought this was a sports car road coarse !! ...

Well, I guess Mitch Tinney can't show the tatoo on his arm of a 69 lb 9 oz he claims he caught on priest and let go that he claims would have been the world record. Guess he needs to get to work and catch one bigger than that on Priest.

I think the only thing Mitch saw over a certified 45 pounds on Priest was maybe in a picture... I know his Dad Stu never saw one, .. Stu and I use to talk about the future stripers in the State ... And Priest would never be a record holder ... ..... ... Stu pioneered Striper fishing on Priest ... I have fished with him in the 70's ... Priest is a very prolific lake for all species of fish, despite the fishing pressure it gets from Metro and Rutherford County .. ... But it has never held the true ingredients for a State nor US landlocked record ...

Fact: Water temp is to warm year round, do to it's Stones river supply in the Spring (which is when the heavy trophys will be caught do to the eggs ) , especially to maintain quality size bait like trout or skippies (don't think there are a lot of these on Priest) ... ... Priest is not cold water fed from Dale or Center Hill Like the Cumberland ...For a project ... check out the largest Striper ever offically certified caught on Priest and the year it was caught ... ;) :)

My friend Joe wood Jr's dad holds the record below percy priest for a striper at 42lbs. It was caught in 84' I believe on a doll fly. I'd say it swam up to the dam from the Cumberland. His dad passed away about 6 years ago. When I met Joe Jr he had a mid 30 lber hanging on a wall in his house that his dad had caught and that's what got me back into fishing after a long hiatus.

Wow! Does anyone know the story about the lake record 76lb blue cat caught on a plastic lizard in 2010???

Reminds me of the 66lb striper a kid in NC caught on a black trick worm.

My favorite Mitch story is this:

I have had some good days on Priest and back when the limit was 10 bass per day, a handful of times my best 10 largemouth averaged 4-3/4 lbs each, and witnesses to prove it. It has been several years since I have seen one of those schools. Caught them on drops on large crankbaits and plastic worms.

I told Mitch this. Mitch said that is pretty good. My best day was 160 lbs. I asked him was that a few large stripers or several hybrids. Mitch's reply was "NO, that was 10 bass in one day on Priest".

What is sad is Mitch may be one of the better fisherman to fish that lake but the crap from him is hard to put up with.

Watch for him at night. He likes to sit in the MIDDLE of the lake with NO LIGHTS TURNED ON while fishing from his boat. Only time I have ever seen him on the lake was about 2:00 am one morning and I almost ran him over. On top of that there was low fog.
