Thursday, December 13, 2012The 2013 Nashville Boat Show will be held January 10-13 at the Nashville Convention Center. Please be sure to visit the Corps of Engineers at Booth 222 to learn about the latest lake and water safety information.


If your going to the boat show, stop by the booth and let them know you do not agree or support their plan to restrict fishing below our dams.

Wouldn't it be awesome if hundreds of fishermen showed up at their booth to vent our frustrations to them? They wouldn't be able to do anything except try to defend their actions, and fail at doing so. I'll be working this week then in Cookeville over the weekend or I'd love to attend just for this purpose. I hope a lot of you can make it!

Rangers are custodians of our waterways and fisheries and they are conservationists at heart. Good people who do a service for our fisheries. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are fellow fisherman who don't agree with the restrictions, but due to their positions....powerless to effect change or even express their opinions.

About The rangers who are custodians of our water way ... I have never run into one of them ... The only Authority I have seen in my many years are TWRA, Local Sheriff Patrols, An occasional USCG in West Tenn and KY ...

Are they Fed Park Rangers? Are they Army Rangers? Corps of Eng's ??? I am a USCG Merchant Marine Officer and I have never seen any .. To be honest I have never run into any on the Navigable waterways on TN and KY ... I am not being smart but I would really like to learn about these folks ... Who are they ... Sounds like they are our kind of people !! <'TK><

Every Lake that belongs to the Corps has a group of Rangers assigned to it. Old Hickory will probably be the group of Rangers representing the Corps at the boat show, but it could be Priest.

These Rangers are charged with protecting the resources on the lakes, conservation biology, environmental protection, safety and boating safety awareness. They patrol the waterways constantly and I see them all the time out on Old Hickory, either on a boat or in vehicles driving around taking care of boat ramps, campgrounds, or providing PFD's to swimmers in the recreation areas.

On Old Hickory, where people own property on the shoreline, the Corps Rangers ensure the waterways are protected from careless homeowners who, while usually are good people, sometimes go beyond the boundaries of their property and cut trees or make changes to the shoreline that can affect erosion or put pollutants in the water.

They are US Army Corps Rangers, Federal Rangers, much like Forestry or the National Parks Service. They wera uniforms and are easily recognizable on the water.

They don't create policy and they don't sit at the highest echelons of power within the Corps of Engineers.

I speak to them all the time when I am on the water, whether it be Old Hickory, Priest, or even the Caney. The ones I have talked to are avid outdoors men and fishermen, and therefore have a vested interest in the projects they work at.

To be honest, I kind of envy that kind of job....to be on the water I love to spend my free time on as much as possible, and yet they get paid to do it.

I just don't think it's fair to take out frustrations about the damn restrictions, which I share completely with many in this forum, on the kind of people who probably don't even agree with those restrictions, but can't say or do anything about it.

Thanks PL ... After thinking about this I guess these are the guys that goes around and check Dock permits, and makes surveys on missing Bouys and log jams ... Great Info .... But so they really don't deal with Fishermen on a one on one Maybe this is why I have never run in to them ... Plus were I fished ... No docks ... no TWRA ... or even Bass Fishermen ... ... Great Info ...

And I hope no one picks on these guys ... But it wouldn't hurt to tell them that their boss is in for a fight ... <'TK><

I talked to the guys at the boat show today. Very nice bunch of guys there. Got some very useful info on auto inflate life jackets.

Last year I spoke with one of the two guys manning the booth, and he wasn't even from around the area, and couldn't answer any questions about the local waterways. I've never seen them on the water either, I guess I don't spend enough time on the Corp maintained waterways?

Probably like any other company as far as product demo or educational shows go. They'll either have people that just travel and do shows or have people who rotate in regionally when needed as a rep.

I wouldn't be rude, unpleasant, or argumentative with the folks at the booth. That would be counterproductive.

But I don't think there's any harm in going by and politely saying, "I wish you'd pass along to the guys upstairs that we wish they'd consider alternatives to this new policy."

I wouldn't want them to say "we had people at the boat show, we talked to hundreds of boaters, and nobody expressed a problem with the new policy."
