As per Facebook they have turned the sluice off at several lakes including Percy Priest, Center Hill, and Wolf Creek Dam. Also looking at the gen schedule at Center Hill it appears to be off.

I will be glad to see the sluice off. It was putting discolored water into the river.

Have you ever noticed that? The water from generation and the cave springs is clear but not sluice for some reason... Construction?

I have noticed that, it happened in the late summer and fall last year too. I had forgotten about it until I showed up at the dam about a month ago. I really don't understand it either!

Travis,
It is my understanding (which isnt a whole lot by the way) that it has to do with the level in the lake of where the sluice water comes from. I believe that is mid-lake level water and that is why it is that color. I believe I heard it explained that way.

Now there was a time that I think there was some grout leaking into the river but the Corps and construction company both said it wasnt true. The Corps was even kind enough to test the water to see if it contained grout and it did not. The only problem was they tested the water right by the dam and the grout was coming into the river in the stream below the campground. I dont know what that chalky looking stuff coating the river banks was. Thank you Corps I feel much better now.

I'm surprised that they have turned the sluice off so early. I have serious doubts that the surface temp on Center Hill is cold enough yet for the lake to have turned over and restored dissolved oxygen to the deep water.

Does anyone know if the sluice gates are still closed today?

Yes they have turned it off until further notice. The only reason they would turn them back on again would be due to low DO content in the water. Now they are running the generators today but no sluice. See the link below, if the were running the sluice it wold be posted on this page.
