View Full Version : Tenkara Rod on Caney Fork question

Has anyone tried a Tenkara rod out on the Caney Fork before or seen it done. I purchased a 12.5 footer last year and use a 12.5' guide line with 3' tippet. I have pretty good luck on panfish in small creeks and ponds. But this is the only fly fishing I have ever done. Maybe an ultralight with 2# would work better?

I haven't but in my opinion that would not be an ideal place for it. I guess you could highstick a lot of places but seems it would be better served on the plateau creeks, smokies and places half as wide as the Caney.

It should work just fine drifting midges and nymphs close to you when there is no generation.Tenkara fishing is "Hi-stick" Nymph fishing with a longer rod and less line. We called it Dopper fishing in the Mountains when I was learning to fly fish.

I will give it a shot then. Hopefully one of the large browns won't take interest. Otherwise I will be taking them up on that lifetime warranty lol!

I'd say pack an ultralight in the car at least for back up.

Tenkara was created for small mountain streams, so the Caney is a bit big and wide for it. I can think of a few narrow runs on the Caney that hold fish where you could probably do okay with it, but I think for the most part you'll have a hard time getting in position for ideal fishing with it.

I'd take the tenkara rod up to some of the Tellico tributaries or maybe the Smokies. You could have some fun with it there.

Right, maybe just keep it in the back of the canoe for practice. On a side note has anyone tried to " put in" at the I-40 rest stop trail? I stopped and seen the angler parking spot yesterday and seen the 2 trails. Kind of steep, maybe I could wait for winter and sled down in the Old Towne. :)

I used that access to put in a canoe once, but it was a pain in the butt - too long of a portage down to the water for a big canoe and gear. Happy Hollow is so close that it makes more sense to just put in there.

Yes and Yes Travis. Sorry I hevan't put up any pics or stories. The only excuse that I can give you is I have been LAZY.
I haven't fished any less than usual. It's just the internet stuff I ahve been bad with. I've only recently been trolling around fishingtn.com again.

I hope the kids a and fishing are going well for you.
