Beautiful morning on the Caney Fork.

On the River at 6 am this morning with my 8 year old. Caught 3 bows, 1 gill and a nice decent largemouth. What a nice float, put in at Gordonsville and went upstream as far as the ole town and trollin motor would let us. My son is becoming quite the angler very proud of him. Tried a new lure from WallyWorld called a Flash similar to a rooster tail. Great casting/running lure.

How far was that using your trolling motor? Did the water feel cool down there yet?

Not too far, the battery had plenty of power left the motor is just 30 lb thrust on a 147 guide canoe. Just to much weight and the 250 cfs current that TVA constantly runs thru is just too much for the two of us. But we went up maybe a mile and drag chained back down. The water is cooling down and I spotted a few large stripers by the bridge at the put in.
My other kids are wanting to go up with me so I am looking at a RiverHawk or G3.

Are they generating a little less these days? I had sort of given up on the Caney for a while but maybe I should check it out again.

There has been less generation lately. I think they are getting Center Hill dialed in for winter pool levels. I keep the TVA ap on my phone to find a definite window to fish. I fish from canoe so I don't get on during generation. But it seems I am able to catch fish here all summer when I have no luck on the lakes although I mostly night fish due to work and 4 children.

I have a Riverhawk and I would be happy to take you out in it and let you see if it would meet your needs. I really like mine. I have the B-60 with a 20hp Honda on it and it pushes it real good.

I usually fish while they are generating, that is my preferred choice as I try to target the big browns and that is when they are more active . I will fish some when they are not generating but that is usually when I will use a kayak. I WILL NOT anchor while they are generating. I have seen several do it, but to me it is just to dangerous. I will normally float down river and then use my big motor to go back up stream. While they are generating I use my big motor as a rudder while I am drifting downstream. I have fished with up to 13,000 cfs and had no problems. I would not advise taking younger ones when the water is rolling that much. I really like my Riverhawk, I had the original and sold it and bought the B-60. I have used it on the lake a few times and it is good in the lake also. Might not want to be on the lake in real windy conditions but other than that it is fine. Thanks Roy, I would enjoy going if you don't mind showing me this technique during generation. I have caught several 24" browns but only at night without generation. So this would be a great challenge. I live in Lebanon and work in the Murfreesboro. What tackle do you recommend?

Are you leaving it on while drifting that much current? In most places on the river minus bridges or 20-25ft from the bank I'd imagine it's not too bad at that much flow.

Travis it depends on the amount of water and where the fish are holding. Usually with 1 generator the fish tend to hold in the middle of the river. If I am fishing in the middle of the river I will usually turn it off. If the fish are holding closer to the bank, which they seem to do during heavier water, then I will leave my engine running because I am having to constantly correct my drift. I learned how to fish that way out in Arkansas on the White River. I figured if it worked out there it would work on the Caney. It is amazing how much those 2 rivers are similar. Pretty much same baits, tactics, and methods work on both rivers.

MNfisher is worth having along if only for the company, his pictures are just great icing on a better cake. He took some shots of a small(ish) striper I caught when we were at the same place (feel free to post them MNfisher, but leave the pic of me out, please). They are even more impressive because the fish was not close to the photographer and apparently the striper was camera-shy. I had to force the fish to the surface and MNfisher only had brief moments to take the shot. Trust me, any action shots you get will be amazing.

If you will read these articles it will give you some GREAT info on how I fish. I mainly use medium spinning gear with 6 or 8 lb nanofil and the same size leader. Franks Saska is probably the best at throwing sticbaits for big brown trout. I plan on going with him this March, more so to pick his brain than fish. Hope this helps you get an idea of how I fish for browns. Also big rainbows love these also.

What is the biggest jerkbaits you throw on that setup? Would it handle a suspending rogue?

I usually fish at night when fishing jerkbaits and they aren't line shy then so I am throwing them on a med or med/hvy baitcasting setup with 14lb line to help direct traffic after they are hooked...low water fishing.

I throw the Xcalibur XT-3 which is a big bait. It is a 2 treble hook model. I use the Pfluger Supreme reel. You might could get away with the bigger gear I have just never personally tried it. I am a big believer in using the lightest line possible. I feel with the 8lb test line and being in the boat I can run them down. I use nanofil which to me seems a lot stronger than it rated strength.

I have been using a XL black-chrome super spook on top water at night on medium gear for the extra fun. It takes a lot of cast though, the striper tend to bust up at it also if I'm in the right area.

Topwater at night is a blast. Next weekend I will be doing some up there with my 6wt and black bass poppers.
