I live in Memphis but I will be at the in-laws over the weekend for a visit. While there is was wanting to spend part of a day fishing. seeing how I live in West TN, I do most my fishing in MS and AK and have never fished much in middle TN. I was wondering if any one could point me in the direction of a good location to wade, main target trout any where within an hour or so of Gallatin.

Well there are no trout streams within an hour of Gallatin. The closet would be the Caney Fork River and I gues it is maybe an hour and a half. But they will probably be generating so it will not be wadeable. If you want to try it check out the TVA website and see if they are generating over the weekend.....the weekend schedule will most likely not be up until Friday.

Other options to consider are Salt Lick which is close to the KY line and likely the closest and then east of you is Flynns Lick around Gainesboro. Both are spring stocking streams. Haven't done Salt Lick but Flynn's Lick also has smallies/bucketmouths/kentuckies in the lower end where it dumps into the warm water lake. The TWRA website should be able to help you.

Salt Lick would be about an hr or little over from you but it's a creek and the last stocking was in April this year.

Since you're not as familiar and there just aren't many options (trout wise) in Mid-Tn so I would stick with either the Caney Fork River (stocked twice a month) or the Obey River (stocked weekly).

The Caney you can go hwy 109 south - 40 East and exit at the Buffalo Valley exit take a right then you'll come to the access on your right in maybe a mile or so. It's well marked. (50-60 miles 1hr or so)

The Obey will be off hwy 52 north of you on hwy 53 in Celina TN. Take 31E north out of Gallatin - hwy 52 head east - hwy 53 north and you will cross it. Take a right on dale hollow dam rd. (60-70 miles 1.5hr or so)

Both tailwaters Obey (Dale Hollow Lake) and Caney (Center Hill) look like they should have low water this weekend on their schedule.

North of Gallatin a few miles in Kentucky, right before you reach Scottsville, there is a stream I think is Trimble Creek. I use to catch smallmouth and understand there are trout stocked in the spring.

Trammel Creek is what you're looking for. I think they stock trout monthly.

Salt Lick Creek in Macon County would be a waste of time. With the drought and extreme heat this summer, I would be very shocked if any trout survived. I'd skip it until it is stocked again next spring.

Trammel Fork in Kentucky might have a few fish. I am sure it suffered badly in the summer too, but it gets stocked through September so there ought to be some fish. If I remember correctly, usually it seems like the last stocking of the year is a small stocking of fingerling brown trout, so the fish you catch may be small and scattered.

The Caney Fork is the next closest river. I used to live in Gallatin and I could drive to the Caney in just a hair under an hour. Maybe I'm just a fast driver. The Obey was 1.5 hours from my door.

The Caney ought to be fishable this weekend but they've been generating a lot lately. Sometimes the trout fishing takes a while to recover from that, but it's probably your best option if you want trout.

The other option would be to wade a creek for smallmouth. The creek bass fishing has been exceptional this year. The only snag might be the weather - this big front coming through tonight is going to put the bass down, I'm afraid.
