A (short) day on the Cumberland

My friend and I hit the Cumberland this morning after the storms rolled through Clarksville. Got to break in the motor on the boat some more and we also caught some bass. It's going to take me some time, I think, to get used to river fishing. It seems like every spot that looks good to me, isn't, and the fish we did catch came out of the most unlikely places. I plan on going to Bass Pro next week to buy a decent fish finder for the bow; maybe that'll help me see what the heck is going on under water so I can get a handle on what sort of structure(s) the fish are relating to.

Nice pictures Nomad, thank you. Where did you launch? Judging by the dead calm looks of the water I suspect a little current would have made all the difference. We launched at the new marina here in Clarksville and wasted quite a bit of time fishing that cove in the marina. I thought with all of those rocks and docks, there would be some fish lurking around but if there were, they didn't want any of what we were offering. I even used a trout magnet around the docks, hoping for some crappie or bluegill but not a bite. Thanks for the link!

I kept looking for current breaks of any kind, thinking that the bass would be around those, to stay out of the main current and to have a place to ambush bait but nope...almost all the fish we caught were about 10 feet out from the bank. That's why I want to get a fish finder so I can look at the structure below the water. It may not help me catch more fish but at least I'll have something to keep me busy while I'm not catching them :D

Nice pics of the river and sounds like a fun trip regardless.

The current does look a little slow down there. I'd suspect like Buc said if there had been some things may have been a bit better. Seems like from your report that you were looking for fish in current breaks when there wasn't any current.

Did you fish around that bridge in the pics?

There was some current but I imagine it's nothing compared to what you guys get around those dams. Just enough current to slowly move the boat down the shoreline without me having to constantly engage the trolling motor.
Yeah, we fished around that bridge; tried the pilings and the downed trees that were in the water but didn't really have much luck in the Red River section, just about all our fish came out of the Cumberland itself.
I just love getting out there...if I ever hit the lottery I'd be on the water every chance I got.
