I need advice on the purchase of a new open faced style rod and reel combo. Since I am still kinda new to fishing I hate to spen a ton. Any advice would be great...

Price Range?
What kind of baits will you be throwing?
What spieces will you be targeting?
What kind of line are you wanting to use braid. mono. flouro, co-poly?
Fishing small creeks, or larger open water?

I like the Okuma Stinson - inexpensive (at Academy), smooth working, tough, 4lb to 8lb line. I have a couple of these and have caught fish from bluegill to 4lb. bass. Put it together with a 6'6" medium action rod and you can have a ball.

It sounds really cheap but I use Wal Mart's R2F (Ready 2 fish) orange rod and reels.
They are like $20 a piece but I've pulled in all kinds of fish with them. I even have 30lb line on them and they work great.
I've pulled in upwards of 22lb channel cats with them no problem at all.
I've had them for about 3 years now and wal mart still carries them.
I've fished for cats, bass, panfish, everything in between,
I bought them in mind of I have broken poles catching catfish before so if these break so well. They haven't broke in 3 years though.

Not really for sure what all I wanna do with it. Not too big. I was told a friend of mine he wanted to teach me to " flip "..and possibly for the upcoming crappie season
