Cumberland River Open Tournament

My coworker's bass club is having 4 open tournaments on the Cumberland River on Saturdays; today was the first one and he asked me if I wanted to give it a try. I thought about it for maybe a nanosecond and said yes since it’s been a while since I got the chance to get out and fish. Unfortunately, with the rains we've had lately the Cumberland was very muddy and the current was quite strong; so strong that he was having problems keeping us in place with his trolling motor.
I told him he was going to be handicapped with me along because I have no clue how to fish current like the Cumberland has :D; most of my fishing has been done in lakes or very slow-moving water. When I cast my plastic bait out and it immediately starts moving downstream, I’m lost :confused:.
A few of the boats with the big motors headed way up to Dover to fish the creeks up that way, and they ended up winning the tournament. My friend and I only caught 2 keepers, and came in 5th place (out of 11 boats, LOL) with a measly 5.36 pounds.

Above is my contribution (caught on a watermelon-colored bitsy bug jig); we never did get a picture of my buddy's fish (but it was about the same size) or of any of the bass that we caught that were under the legal 15-inch limit (All our fish were caught on jigs, senkos or shaky heads; they wouldn't touch rattle traps, crank baits, spinnerbaits or chatterbaits - which I foolishly thought would be sure bets in muddy water :(). I’ll have to say that today was the hardest I’ve ever had it fishing. Sure, I fished some muddy water back in Korea but the old Cumberland was moving right along today, the water was muddy, it was hot as blazes out and the fish just weren’t in a cooperative mood at all. But, it sure was a great learning experience for me and I can't wait to get back out and do it again.

Oh and check out this nice catfish one of my coworker's friends caught out there today...he guessed it was around 30 pounds or so.

No need in running off nomad. We don't want to lose you . Although jugger is right about your co workers cat he just came across wrong in how he came about pointing it out!!! I would guess in mid teens at best but no reason for anyone to get upset or quit posting here. It's not that big of a deal!!

Hey Brother I was not saying anything to you, you said that your co-worker guessed that the fish went 30 pounds, so my comment was towards your co-worker not you! And trust me when I say that you or anyone else on the forum has the ability to raise my blood pressure. It is almost like you are saying that " I am taking my toys and going home" by not wanting to post anymore, we do not want you to leave but not everyone is allways going to agree what others say or post on here. It is an open forum! I think that you just need to man up! And do not let things get to you! And I never said that you were telling me that his fish was bigger tthan mine, I was just showing you a 30 pound flatty to compare wiith. You took me the wrong way!

Everyone can express his opinion as long he don't harm others. I think you were a little bit sensitive and maybe misunderstood him.

As Tennesseejugger stated, it is an open forum, and you can't control what other people post.

Enjoy your time here, and keep sharing your stuff with us. And hopefully we will get to know each other better at the gathering.

I'm locking this thread. Everyone's had their say. Two comments:

1. I have learned the hard way that nothing good ever comes of telling someone their fish is smaller than they think it is. I have done this before and I always regretted it. Nowadays I stick with "It is hard to judge the size of a fish from a photo" and I leave it at that. I might laugh about a bad size estimate privately with my friends, but calling out someone on the public forum always leads to the same result. If someone wants to know how big you think their fish is, they'll ask.

2. Nomad, I hope you will reconsider your decision to leave. I appreciate your input here.

This thread could have been an informative discussion on how to fish the Cumberland when it's muddy with strong current - tough conditions for sure. Instead it became a pointless argument about how big a fish was. Let's all try not to do that in the future.

Nomad I hope you reconsider ... I have just returned from Fla. after a few days and Have not kept up with the board ... bd is right ... There are some issues that bother fishermen and one of them is the size of MY FISH ...

Myself,like bd, has learned .. this is a red flag when you see this ... Kind a like 'Catch and release" ... I would say I am a pretty good judge of Stripers when it comes to size, length, girth, weight etc ... and good at interpulations when you have something to use as a reference like a thumb, finger etc ...

The point I am trying to make is For some folks a 12 pound fish may look like a 20 pound fish or in their mind that is what they want it to be ... But it really doesn't make any difference ...

What we have learned is this ... The poster (no Matter who it is but he is a fellow member of this site) is proud of what he or one of his kids have caught ... Probably the largest fish he or his kids has put in the boat ... In your mind the size may be questionable, Maybe it was just a guess with no way the officially weigh the fish etc ...

But the bottom line is ... He is proud of the accomplishment and you should be to ... This site is for people to learn, enjoy and promote One of the best Outdoor pastimes in the world .... FISHING !!!! ... <'TK>< ;)
