Tried a couple hours of bank fishing on the the Little Harpeth today in Edwin Warner Park. Caught a sunfish and my first ever small mouth, which was a lot of fun, even though it was only 11 inches or so long. Both on a Rooster Tail, which seems to be the only lure I ever catch anything on. Any other suggestions of lures to throw?

Small curlytail grub is a good creek/river bait. Also nightcrawlers or red wigglers.

I like finesse baits for fishing creeks and shallow rivers instead of larger crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Soft plastics like Charlie Brewer Sliders and Case Hellgrammites are a reliable choice. Tube jigs and unweighted flukes are a good choice too. I like Rapala floating minnows for topwater.

Also behind the movie theater near the shoneys there is a pretty big pond that is all overflow from when the river floods. There are bass there also. Hard to catch them but they are there.

The KVD 1.5 is not a large crankbait and you will do wonders in creeks with it!

Just curious, you are always mentioning the KVD sexy shad 1.5...what is it about that crankbait that you think has brought you so much success with it? I saw them in WalMart yesterday and almost bought one.

Not sure really, maybe the color that action, I alway like square bills anyways. But All I can tell you is when you throw that sucker out there and bring it back with a swift retrieve it will catch fish! I think that I have proved that with all the pics that I have posted. I try to locate suspended bait and throw it about 10 to 15 yards passed them and that is when I do the best. It is also awesome around structure and cover, but cat past it and get those reaction strikes!

I like crankbaits but my killer crank that is the one I always turn to first is the Bomber Model A crank... firetiger color. I have a couple others that catch fish here and there but nothing beats that firetiger one. I may pick up one of those KVD cranks and give it a shot sometime

I haven't seen them in there, not the Model A anyway. I order mine from Cabelas. I've seen them in Dicks though.

I'll put a slider or a case hellgrammite up against it any day in a small creek.

Number one get your feet wet and get in the water.I have not fished the park in 20 years but when I did I hopped in and waded.Expand your horizons and get a map and look at other streams also.
#2 there are many lures that will produce in our streams depends on what your budget is .
I like soft plastics. Case and Slider are my favorirte. There are many other plastics that will produce. I like some of Prowler Lures plastics also and I have gotten them free for years. I would rather fish the Case and Slider lures and the Zoom baby/tiny brush hogs in our small streams. Slider 4 inch, slider bass grub, Case hellgramite,Jacks worm 4 and 6 inch are awesome. For the Rock Bass and Smallies in our streams my bait of confidence is the 4 inch jacks worm weightless early and late and on a slider spider head during the day. Now live bait is the best and cheapest in the long run if you want to spend the time to catch it and learn how to .
Find something you are comfortable and have confidence in. I suggest taking one of the lures mentioned in all the post, if plastics get one bait in pumpkin, junebug(dark blue colors) and watermelon red. (As far as crank baits I do not throw them (in the streams)except rapala and that is gold and black. the little x raps work great according to a client) ) Learn to fish the same lure with different presentations you will catch fish. Example: I can fish beside bd with his case hellgramite and I can fish with a jack's worm almost 2 inches larger (looks like a senko but has a tapered tail) and we will probably be even at the end of day with numbers and size. Because we have learned how to present a certain bait and have confidence in that bait.
Listen to all the folks on this board, individuals have favorite or comfort baits you just got to pick a couple (do not break the bank) and fish them.
Hey bd since we have not fished since an April Snow Storm or was it the 20 incher (can not remember) lets try the above analogy this summer together.

That is true Mike.
For years I'd carry a box load of things to the creek but since I found the zoom's will catch any thing I want in there they are all I carry.
Confidence a big thing sometimes. Just find something you like fishing.
ps.. if you try the zoom's another trick with them that drives smallies crazy is to dip the tail a little in purple. Caught tons on red-eyes and smallies that way.
