just got a little place on elk river with a camper wondering if anyone ever fished there?

Is your place near the Anderson Creek / Le High bridge on HWY 72.
My father and I fished the TN river from the Elk to Wheeler dam for many years. During the 70's and 80's we caught our share of LM and SM bass. Also enjoyed catching very large white bass and crappie.
My father passed in 1989 so I lost interest in driving there every week end without him. The few times I fished there in the 90's fishing was not as good.
Best fishing was from Wheeler up to about the 1/2 distance to the mouth of the Elk. Never was successful in the Elk.

I stopped at the Le High bridge about 3 weeks back and there was a local club weigh in. About 18 lbs won. Ate near the dam and a local showed me pictures of smallies that made me drool. More than one stringer of 5 fish weighing 30 + lbs. He had a 10 lb l0 oz large mouth in one photo. These came from below Wheeler since the first of Jan.

Sorry for the long post. Good fishing to ya.

If you are not familiar with the area take precautions when the wind picks up. Small boats can be swamped before you realize that you should left the water a few minutes earlier. If the channel of the Tn turns dark green get off immediately.

The lake side of Wheeler always seems to turn dark green to almost black before the rolling swells hit. The Elk can also get treacherous when the wind blows up stream.
There are dams (or remnants) on the Elk. They would be quite a ways upstream of the bridge on Hwy 72 that I asked about.
