Canoe anchor system?

I hate it when im drifting down the harpeth and come by a hole filled with fish and theres no place to stop, so i want to put an anchor system in for my 14 foot canoe. Anyone know how to do this? Preferably under 50 bucks, or i could try and make one.

Been working on the same thing for my kayak. Best thing that I have found so far is a retractable dog leash and a piece of log chain. So far it is working well.

I use exactly what Browntrout said. I only have about 12 links of chain on the thing and it works great.

I have 16 inches doubled...so total 32 inches of the heaviest chain Lowes sells on my kayak. It does OK but will not hold me still. It does not take much of a wind to pull me. Now I am a big fellow....and when I owned several bass boats I found out the heavier boat needed a bigger anchor. I can't really do anymore chain...no room in the handle opening for anything bigger....and I have modified the handle. But I don't really want to go to a fluke anchor....too much chance of getting it hung up and when you cut the line there goes the 30 plus bucks for the 26 foot Flexi dog leash. So I guess I live with a slow drift.

I bet something like this would work pretty slick. Granted its over $50, but it would make this easier.

Pyramid anchors work really well for holding you in place on in the river. My dad got a 40 pound one on our driftboat and we've nenver had many problems slipping in the faster current.

These smaller ones would probably work pretty well for a kayak or canoe.

I too use the retractable dog leash instead of a rope. I didn't know anybody else but me had thought of that. :) It's great because you don't have anchor rope all over the floor of your boat.

Instead of log chain, I use a 22 lb. crab claw anchor like this:

They will dig into the bottom and hold you in position MUCH better than a long chain. If it will hold my Gheenoe in current with two people, I guarantee you it will hold a canoe. The crab claw is the absolute best anchor design I've found for holding the bottom securely.

The only time I use a chain is when I want to continue to drift, but I just want to use the weight of the chain to slow my boat down.
