Travis, I just joined this forum today and I will be on the Caney tomorrow. With 4 months of generation, it'll take awhile for the water to drop. I'll put in at HH around 10 or 11 and motor up close to the dam and fish back. I'll be in an olive green Gheenoe. Look for me or PM for my phone number. I'd love to fish with someone who knows how to catch fish as I am normally the designated guide.

jad2t, You gotta plan ahead brother. I told my boss two months ago that the day the generators stopped I was calling in for a day off.

In my experience, on the first day of low water after a long period of continuous generation, the trout tend to freak out a little bit.

Usually, they will steer clear of the shallow runs and riffles where you usually find them, and instead they will stage up near those runs in deep water. If you're lucky enough to get some insect hatch activity, it may draw the fish up and get them eating. That's not out of the question considering how warm it's been - there were a decent number of midges coming out last Saturday even considering the high water. Otherwise, they're going to lay low in the deep water.

Unless you're willing to put on a nightcrawler and still-fish bait in the deeper holes, catching them will be a matter of dredging the deep water low and slow. Trout magnets on spinning gear or deep nymphing rigs on the flyrod are probably the best bet. If you find one fish, stay on the spot because they're likely to be clustered together.

Shoot, I am just one of the many on here that can catch fish. This site is full of them. Usually due to ball, I don't really get many Caney trips in until April.

oh yea they turned the genertor off right at 7am just like they said. but at 7.02am. they told us to get out of the area they are opening a gate. soo then they turned the sluice garte WOF. ran 3500cfs all dang day.:mad:

Its the Corps link I referred to being screwed up.

But that forecast only gives you how much for that day. Sometimes they run all day for that total and sometimes its a several hour pulse then hours off to get that total. You never really know.

You kinda have to use the TVA sites schedule with this to get a good guess to go on.

The only things I do know for sure about the generation up there is #1 the sluice is manually operated, generators operated from Cordell Hull.. #2 the most important thing is on that second link at the bottom. You want Center Hill to be around 620ft or less then your getting wading windows.

I talked to someone from the Corps tonight. Basically, they are doing some maintenance work on the generator units, and so they're going to have the generators shut down for a few days, at least on and off.

However, to maintain upstream lake levels while they're doing the work, they will have the sluice open whenever the generators are off.

So if you see zero generators in the forecast, you can assume the sluice will be open for the time being. I assume the previous heavy generation schedule will resume once the maintenance work is done.

They seemed to be making headway although still about 7 feet to go.

I really do appreciate the info you guys have.

jad2t, I put in at HH around noon and motored up to the steps at the end of the nature trail below the dam. The water level is down about 5' from last week but at 3k+ flow, it's still flowing pretty good.
I threw an olive bugger with a zebra midge trailing and had practically no action, just a couple curious bows. I switched to a spinning rod with a rainbow colored jerk bait in the Lancaster area. This prompted a little brown action but most fish were short striking. When I finally had a really good fish on, my drag was loose from a previous hang up and after the third jumb, and unable to get a good hook set, she spit it out. From talking with the few others on the river, seems like a few fish were caught with live worms on the bottom.
