Where are you fishing at?
Slip float, split shot, medium size minnow.
Tube jig or grub jig under a float or on its own.
Swivel with weight on the bottom, leader off to the side above it with hook/minnow.
Those are the most common ways to fish for them with the last one being a bottom bouncing technique. Find any wood structure it could be tree, fence, stake bed, dock and drop a float with a minnow or jig off around it. Should not take long for you to tell if one is around. Docks or Laydowns (fallen trees) near a channel would be high up on my list of checkin places.

I would add to those great tips, if you are in a boat and have a depth finder find out what depth most of the fish are in relation to structure. This has led to a lot of success for me. I also agree, that you will generally know pretty quick if there are any crappie where you are fishing. Don't wast too much time in one spot.
