Today, Charlie Faulkner and I hit my favorite spring runs for smallies and rock bass. The last few days of warm weather has really got the creeks warmed up.. Our first smallmouth stop we had one Rock Bass and saw some largemouth being caught. We only stayed an hour(the big females weren't there yet) and I decided to make a drive up river to check on a smaller run of rock bass and smallies. We fished there for 2 hours catching 11 smallies casting to the same spot and loosing 4 more. We also caught a dozen small rock bass on plastics and creekminnows. The fish are staging and these areas will be on fire in the next few days. We decided to take a lunch break and grab the boat for the remaining few hours and fish the skinny water of the Stones. The wind really kicked up and the water temp was 64 so the fish are going to spawn in the slower sections of the river soon and I imagine some are on bed. We caught only largemouth throwing creekminnows deep and plastics on the spawning type banks. This is my favorite time of year for the trophy smallies and rock bass. We did not have any true trophys today but fish like these in heavy current are a blast to catch. The trophy creek fish will appear in the next few days and then it is creekfishing time till October for me. Give us a shout if you want to learn more about our Middle TN Streams and the most economical way to catch lots of fish all summer long.
