Happy New Year everyone. Got late start this morning. Got to Holly creek about 12. Tried umbrella rig and cranks. Finally caught one 15" small mouth on a bitsy bug. Had friend get up there early and he only managed 3 on umbrella rig. Water had some color up lake. Temp 49-50. May try lower end of old hickory in the morning. It's back to work tomorrow nite.

It's hard for me to describe how I feel when I catch nice smallmouth. It's truly an honor for me. I enjoy fishing for LM more bc I love fishing shallow cover. But I love catching smallmouth more than anything. I'm not sure if that even makes sense to anyone else.

Makes sense to me, I spent many years chasing Smallies on the Upper Potomac river. They are addicting :)

I am wanting to take a trip up in the next couple months. Something I struggle with is Line size. I don't know what most people use there with the clear water.

I'm no finisse fisherman. I really don't even give it much thought. I use braid mostly for Topwater. I use minimum 14lb floro for bottom baits and 12 mono for cranks and jerkbaits. 20lb floro for a-rig. That's my setup anywhere I fish. It's just what I have confidence in.

That's way heavier than I was thinking for DH.

Typically I use P-Line and Trilene Clear or Crystal:
6# for Float and Fly
8# for Spinny cast
10# for Bait cast
10-12# Floro on braid for vertical Jigging and trolling

Most of you on here know what I use. Some may not....but I have no problems hooking and landing all the Smallies I want with 2# test and UL rod. Nowhere for them to go except deeper water. Putting new trailer hubs on....waiting on Minn Kota to return trolling motor....getting ready to burn up the hiway fishing up there March-May. Just don't do the cold anymore. Bought a new JDM rod and got another one as a Christmas gift. Looking at new HB Mega imaging unit. I'm ready to fish! Life is good!

Alpha, what happened to the Ulterra?
I'm looking at the new 12" Helix SI myself.

On four separate times it would not stow. I had to go through the manual stow procedure. But when I would put it back together it would work again. I just did not like being on the water knowing that was subject to happen again. Plus it needed the magnet update, and the belt block update. I suspect the magnets were causing the problem. I made repeated calls to them and they wanted me to take it to Tracker Marine...which I would not do. My dealings with Tracker Marine were not pleasant and after what you went through with your motor being up there I persisted until they agreed to pay the shipping to get it back to them. I love the motor. When it would not stow I would just pull up somewhere and do the manual stow procedure and all would be well again. It usually happened about every 3 months. A 12" Helix would be the bomb.

Itis Humminbird's new Helix G2 and GN2 units with the 2d, si, and di CHIRPed. The clarity and image are stunning. It gives excellent target separation of fish and structure.

I googled some screen shots of that unit....pretty impressive.
My question is, if you buy the unit for $1500-$2k....do you get the BEST transducer with it, or do you need to spend another $400-$600 on the fancy transducer upgrade to get them good images?

It comes with a new style transducer. It has a di transducer built in....unlike the old model that used composite di from the 2 si piezo. Transducer is much bigger than the old HD one. So yes you get the best transducer in the box.

That $1500-2k is on the light side. Lowrance HDS carbon series is their answer to the mega and they start at $2200 and up!! Garmin has had CHIRPed si, di for a while now and it's always impressed me. But we all know that don't take much!!! 😂
