Can I mount these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001M4HT2A/ref=twister_B00CF4VWEC?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 on the edge of the side of a kayak or canoe. I see lots of pics of people mounting them on plates or on the inside of a canoe or kayak. Is there a reason for that?

Not a problem...use backer plate for strength. There are a number of designs out there.

Didn't want to start a new thread but have one more question. Is it worth it to get the Down Imaging and 2d sonar on the same fish finder?

You will want to keep all holes for the rod holders above the waterline. Generally speaking, placing the holders outside, rather than on the top of the deck, leads to being in the way during paddle strokes. Also the mounts tend to take more hits to rocks (river only issue) and snag on things while in transport. Both of which can lead to the screw holes widening/deforming/tearing out.

I use similar mounts (Rod Tender Twin Pack), but have mine mounted on a milk crate that is strapped down behind my kayak seat. I don't like to have any obstructions in front of me.

I highly suggest that one use their kayak several times before adding hardware to refine location.

PS I don't know about your sonar question, I never have used one on a kayak and have no plans to ever use one (on a kayak):)

Yes, you will find it invaluable. On a 5" screen a split view is pretty small but you can toggle back and forth on a full screen view. Also recommend an internal GPS unit to drop waypoints when you find something interesting. DI will become your favorite, but you need to be in motion for it to be it's most effective. If stationary over a waypoint and vertical jigging or drop shotting, 2D is what you want.
