I put the boat in Rockland harbor last evening to try out the Minnkota Ulterra trolling motor.
After ascertaining that it worked fine, I decided to do a little scouting for bait.
Found a few huge schools of bait on the HB Helix 12 and decided to see what size they were.
Uncoiled my 7' net with 5/8" mesh and proceeded to throw at five or six different schools. Nada, did not bring in one bait!
Coiled that net up, put it away and pulled out a 7', 3/8" net.
Made one throw and pulled in about 100 or so shad, each about 2 1/2 inches long. Was able to shake out most but still had to pick out 20 or so. Didn't throw again, I had answered my question and didn't want to pick out more shad from the net.
And this is why you need different sizes nets on board, not to mention when you throw the net and it gets hung and you can't retrieve it. Been there, done that.
Had a brand new 7' net, on the 2nd ever throw, it got into something and I could not budge it. Wound up having to cut the rope and leave it. BUMMER!

I also have been having trouble catching smaller size bait. I wanted smaller shiners for sauger fishing. Every cast i throw they slip on thru.
I was going to get a 1/4" net to try to get smaller bait.
seems that most of them are nylon and I'm not sure how good that is.

Go online to memphisnetandtwine.com. they have a 1/4 inch multi-filament net (in all different sizes) that is good for smaller baits that won't hang the baits by the gills.
I use a 6 footer for creek minnows.
