Went out before sunrise this morning hoping for some good bass action and that's exactly what I found I lost the biggest bass of the year right at the net! I was fishing the upper end in smallie and spot country but that's not what I hooked into, it was a largemouth the was at least 20" fought it for 2 or 3 minutes on 6lb test in the current, brought it up to the net only to hit it's head on the net and the hook popped right out and I watched as she swam back to the depths, the thing looked like a football. Ended up with about 10 smalies biggest was 15" and a dozen chucky spots, a couple catfish and a 21" sheepshead.

So why is this called the death ramp? Was thinking about checking it out until that :confused:

It's damn near vertical, with no room for error on the edges. Also there is no way to beach your boat if you're launching alone, unless you're willing to scratch the hell out of your gel coat/keel. Also the parking area is suspect at best until the light of day exposes the dregs of society that frequent the area.

That ramp was the first ramp I ever backed a trailer down lol

There is a sweet spot on the beach with no rocks just sand, I am usually fishing alone so I either have to beach it or pull up to the ramp very slowly and let the keel guard do its thing and tie off to a big rock if the waters rolling pretty good. If I plan to fish more than the first few miles below the dam I will launch at heartland but there again you have an even sketchyier beach lol, and yeah I my sig stays on me at all times at these sometimes skethy ramps but the good fishing just keeps me coming back.

Never had a problem at that ramp...used to sit on the rocks down there for all hours of the night and morning. As far as launching by yourself, it can be tricky.

I've used that ramp and parking lot many times, never had a problem.
And, yes, if one needs a three boat wide ramp to back down a boat, they will be a while backing down, straightening up, backing down again, til they finally hit water.
I carry a 50 ft rope so I can land on the sand area and tie my boat off to the trees onshore.
Sorry the fat lady got away but she did her job. Our job is to catch them, her job was to escape. Sounds like she won today.

I've had windows busted out in broad daylight at the OH dam ramp, only took a CD but left hundreds of dollars of damage to the truck.

I agree the parking lot is sketchy, but backing down the ramp is not an issue at all other than being long. It is not steep at all and if you have an aluminum boat you just pull up on the gravel and tie off.

Thanks merv it was a fun one the spots were right on the bank and the smallies were down in about 5-10 ft, I threw into a rootwad of a downed tree and as soon as the lure hit the water the big Ole largie slammed it, I couldnt believe a largemouth would be up that far up the river, that thing had me shaking for a few I was so bummed but I was going to release her anyway, that was the first one I've ever hooked up that far.

Since you weren't in a tournament, no harm, no foul.
All you lost was the photo but you got all the GOOD STUFF.

That river has some BIG largemouths in it! i was surprised when i got some that i caught. Not in any creek or backwater area, but in the main river, just a mile or 2 from the dam.
You will get her again!

Agree 100%. I never get upset at losing a big one at the boat. I figure I got the best of everything and only miss the picture since they were going to be released anyway.

aaahh ,.... but there is just something about being able to lip hold a big bass in the water at the side of the boat (not lifting into boat) and then removing the hook and letting him go and watching as he swims back down to the depth's. ..:) ...just for that short moment all is right with the world.
