Normandy

Spent a little over 5 hours below Normandy Dam today.....and what a day it was! Well over 100 trout caught on Trout Magnet in pink....Bison colors. All fish caught on Major Craft FineTail Banshee 6'7" Area trout rod using SOS 2# test with 2# test Phantom fluro leader. Some were caught under the float but most were caught twitching. Also caught around 30 or so black perch...mostly at the 7 inch mark. The majority of the trout were 13-14 inches....nice fat fish and what a fight they put up! I left just because my hands were too tired to catch any more....that's a good problem to have. I was hoping to find the KY bass in there but didn't catch a one. The flow was only about 65 CFS...if you know the river you know where they concentrate when the flow gets that low. Now is time to hit Normandy with the flow this low. Ran into a forum member at the store...John....didn't get his forum name...he had a great looking River Pro boat getting ready to look for some crappie on the lake....nice guy. Going to wipe down reels and rods....tie a Trout Magnet on one and a Thunder Hawk Micro Dancer on the other......then going to head out again in the morning. Life is good!

That's a good day. I went Saturday after my debacle at my house and caught maybe 10, best being 14". I fished up around the dam but could not find any groups of fish, mine were all scattered. I know you like the low flow but I have done better on higher water. I might give it a try again this week one afternoon. I would love to catch that many trout that size because it would boost our kayak wars team up quite a bit.

I do like low flow but 100 would have been better. The lower flows do concentrate the fish though. Those trout were digging today. Once they would see me they would peel out line.....making several runs. Best day I have had in a very long time. A kayaker got in trouble there I think last week or so. The people at the hatchery had to get them out. They opened up spill gate with no warning.

I'm so upset I'm tearing up. Happy for your incredible catch but... wish I was there.

Thanks for the comments. There never was a Shad kill at Normandy this year. Had there been the trout would have been a lot bigger.

Dang, I would not want to be up around the dam if they opened those things. I remember fishing with my dad when I was younger and within minutes the water was up a few feet and we had to grab our gear and go.

Dang, I would not want to be up around the dam if they opened those things. I remember fishing with my dad when I was younger and within minutes the water was up a few feet and we had to grab our gear and go.

Normandy does this every so often. There is no horn or anything. I saw a friend there today who told me about it....he was there when it happened. He and his brother were fishing down at the bridge and heard the water coming and got out. I have had it happen to me there two times in about 7 years.

I recall there used to be a sign below the dam that stated "water to rise without warning" or something similar, as I have had to shimmy up the bank to keep from getting in trouble.

I recall there used to be a sign below the dam that stated "water to rise without warning" or something similar, as I have had to shimmy up the bank to keep from getting in trouble.

There are signs but Normandy is the only dam I have ever been at that does not sound any warning at all.

Thanks....fishing a Trout Magnet...on low water at the tailrace fisheries those numbers are common. Out on the White and Little Red River in Arkansas catches of 150-200 trout a day are the norm. There are a little over 7 miles of tail water below Normandy that they stock. They die off after July. The last article I read about number of trout stocked below Normandy in those 7 miles is between 25-27 thousand. That figures out to about 3,800 trout per mile so on low water it makes for some great days.

I almost came out there today,now I wished I had. I went yesterday and caught 5 up by the dam. Going to take the boat tomorrow and see if the crappie are ready to eat yet.

Went back today.....caught 3 trout. Started out at Nickajack.....only caught 3 crappie....nothing else hit at all. My point "They don't bite everyday".....LOL.

Yes it is. My buddies down at Nickajack were all leaving when I arrived at about 8:00 a.m. They had been fishing before sunup and caught nothing....my first indication of a bad day. I couldn't even catch a yellow belly. Will hit it again Thursday and Friday somewhere.
