View Full Version : Steam Plant Today

So today, family friend was in town to visit...
He has never caught a striper before, so that was our targeted spiecies today.
So we headed down to the gallatin steam plant (ignoring the fact that its been slow) with the hopes to catch his first one! I figured if the water temp is Warner at the steam plant than anywhere else, which it was (47'f main channel) (56'f steam plant) we have a better shot there than anywhere.
As we arrived about an hour and a half past sunrise the boat load was not overwhelming so we moved in...
We fished:
Flukes
Live bait
Crank baits
Stick popers... You name it
So it seemed the bite was slow for everyone at the moment.
And then my guest hooks up, but unfortunately all three times he did hook up they were not Striper BUT they were very nice largemouth bass and a huge Skippy!
Not to often I see credible tournament worthy largemouth caught on OH.
Even though we didn't get our targeted species we had a blast and we did not leave empty handed.
(2)Largemouth bass
(1)15" Skipjack

Glad he got to atleast hook into a set of lips! old hickory has been on fire the past couple years for largemouth. I've seen a lot of tournaments that took 20-22 lbs to win. I've had days where I was wishing I was in a tournament because of the load of quality fish I had caught. Lol. It's not near as bad of a largemouth lake as some think it is. Old hickory did make bassmasters top 100 bass lakes of the country last year also. So watch out, there may come a day when the FLW or Elite series comes to town!! If that day comes I'm gonna go sit on my honey hole and protect my fat baby girls!!! Lol😂😂😂

Lol.. Right on without a doubt, but I'm from South Florida... I guess that's where my perspective is coming from Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades produce some pretty sick largies! That's all my past twenty + years of fishing about ten here and ten plus there back home. But by all means Old Hickory is a fantastic fishery I absolutely love it, so I do agree with what your saying.

Well that makes a difference!!! If I was to catch a ten I'd probably have to change my pants!!!! Okeechobee is a killer lake. I'd love to hit up a guide while I'm down there this summer on vacation, but the ol lady has made a stack of plans!!!! Who plans out the whole vacation trip?!?!? WOMEN!!! Lol

SKillet you need to learn how to play the game brother, I set my wife up with a spa day so she won't miss me while I'm fishing when we are kid free. And give her ample kid free time when we have kids to compensate for my fishing time.:)

FoSho I don't know how my boy Dirk aka Fishaholic does it but with a wife live in mother in-law and two kids he still gets the job done I would listen to that advice no doubt!

Hahaha....well the mother-in-law is going with us this time. 😵🔫. But it might give me a chance to break free for a day. I'm waiting to see how it's gonna pan out. If I can't get some "special" alone time on the beach with the ol lady 😂👍🏼one night, she will have to owe me some fishing time!!! That's how I'm gonna play it

HaHaHa! My mother in law does not understand why I have 20 fishing rods and reels when her husband just has 2. I think they are coming into town for Easter so I will probably drag him out for some crappie fishing. He did not do to well last Easter.

You would think mine would be good with it. They love fish but my FIL does not really fish much. They always ask for fish from me.

Thought I would share this since this discussion turned to in-laws. My first in-laws hated the fact I fished...pure and simple. I married again. My new father in-law at the time did not fish and had not fished since he was a little boy. I had to retire early in 2001. I lived in west TN and bought my first boat. In April of that year my then father in-law told me he wanted to fish with me. I blew him off. I was fishing 5 days a week below Pickwick. He kept at me and I finally agreed thinking he would go maybe once or twice and quit. I mean he didn't even know how to cast. I told him to be at my house at 5:00 a.m. At 4:45 a.m. he was outside blowing his horn. For the next 3 years he never missed a day of fishing with me. We went 5 days a week no matter the weather except for lightning. We fished days as cold as 7 degrees...and on days when the temps were hovering around 100 degrees. I have never seen anyone take to it like him. He had a heart condition but he lived for that next day. Then...as now....I was into mostly catch and release. Not him....most everyday we came back with a limit of crappie...Gills......or white bass....not getting home until well after dark...yet he stayed up and cleaned every fish and was always ready to go the next morning. There were some days I just did not want to go...yet he pestered me until I gave in and went. I went through 4 boats in those 3 years...the last one being a deep V so he did not have to fish on a deck. It seemed both of us were always somewhere on weekends buying fishing gear.....his wife was happy he had something to keep him busy. That marriage did not last yet after moving back to mid TN I would visit him on occasion until he passed away in 2007. He quit fishing when I left...but on my visits that is all he talked about. Too bad his son did not fish.

Regards

My ol lady ain't bad and never gives me grief on any of my fishing addictions unless I'm watching it on tv!! Lol. She understands...and she knew what she was getting into when we got together. We used to go together all the time, now I can barely get her to go. But my son loves it, and I'm soooo grateful for that.
