I'm heading out tomorrow to fish in the lake by the dam. Found a few spots I like but wanted to see if anyone would be willing to give me any ideas for walleye or bass.

I used to fish the dam area quite a lot when I lived south of Nashville. Fish white/chartreuse grub's, redfins and spoons from the dam down. Concentrate directly below the dam for walleye, and rainbows. Don't get in the water because of all the fishing line from hung lures...Saw a guy nearly drown there one year hung up just off the bank.

Juice, I spoke with the fisheries technician for Bedford Co. a few weeks back and he said the walleyes have left the dam area in numbers and you are most likely to find them up lake around the second bridge now, should be a pretty day, I got Daddy duties today or I would join you out there, God luck!

Thank you for the heads up. I have a feeling I will be paddling and learning the new Helix unit more than fishing. Hopefully I stumble across some fish.

Interested in trying this area for trout walleye and smallmouth. Will have kayaks. I assume the trout will be within the first couple miles below the dam and smallmouth throughout the river? Is the biggest population of walleye in the lake or the river below?

The trout are below the dam, caught them within a few miles down river growing up. I know walleye and spots move up to the dam in the spring. I did not get to fish today. I had to go to a two story water damage this morning at 9 and got home around 6:30. Water heater burst flooding a few rooms up and down, don't put your water heater upstairs!

You can find trout for 7 miles below the dam. Not as many Smallies below Normandy as in other parts of the Duck. Lot more walleye in that lake than below that dam...but don't overlook the river for quality walleyes. Got these out of the river. I don't target them so if you are a walleye guy you can probably do very well.

I got the 7 KVD at the moment. if I like it I will get the bigger ones later on. I prefer Lowrance but for the price the Helix are hard to beat.

Alpha, don't know if you are interested in Lowrance or not, but if you buy the Lowrance before Jan15, they throw in the "spotlight" for free. Spotlight is the same as HB's 360.
I'm getting the Lowrance HDS 12 Touch Gen 3 after the new year starts and will be getting rid of my 360 and 1199ci HD SI.
Gonna try the dark side for a change.

I'm not brand loyal by any means on these new sonars....I think they are all good IMHO. I will stick with HB as I get them at cost....a huge savings for me. That HDS 12 Gen 3 is a heck of a unit.

Yeah, I would stick with HB if I got them at cost too :) Friend I fish with has the HDS 9 Gen 3, they are sweet. I think the Side/down scan looks better then HB. I will say no matter what brand you have with Down/Side scan you have a leg up on anyone without it. I don't like fishing without it after fishing out of his boat. I got to see how much of a difference it makes and that's why I ordered one.

I fished with gboyce earlier this year and he had switched from the HB 1199 ci HD SI to the Lowrance HDS 12 Touch Gen 3. World of difference between the Lowrance and the HB. Down scan and side imaging are so much clearer on the Lowrance units.

I have the HB 859 HD DI on the bow and the HB 1199ci HD SI on the console. I will keep the HB on the TM and put the HDS 12 on the console. By buying the HDS before Jan 15th, I'll get the spotlight (comparable to HB 360) feature thrown in for free.

I woud like to see a Helix 12 in action but don't believe they are out yet.
JE Vanetta, rep for Johnson, says he will be in Nashville area giving a seminar and showing the new Helix units in February. But I will have already purchased my HDS by then.

I plan on getting mine right after the new year starts.

Merv, I think you are making the better choice. Like I said before I think the Lowrance is a much better unit. The Images are clearer and easier to read to me. The Helix was purely a bang for my buck thing. 20% Black Friday sale, free shipping and no tax.

Now I have the walleye itch. Along with all my other itches.
