After reading several posts on the board about night fishing on the Caney Fork I decided to give it a try. It was definitely more challenging in the dark but I was not disappointed. I was finally able to land a big fish from the Caney. We put in at the dam and were using jerk baits.

Congrats!, thats a hog. I tried to make it up there Saturday night but too many honey-do's this weekend. Did you guys stay in the pond area the whole time or drift down to Happys?

Thanks. We tried floating down to Happy but after an overhanging limb almost knocked me out of the boat and a roosting blue heron nearly took my head off and scared me so bad I nearly pooped my pants we decided to turn around back to the pond. The river is a different beast at night. The length was 25 inches but it’s girth was bigger than a football.

Lol, I know what you mean that river at night with the current/fog/no visibility/shallows can be very disorienting.
Me and my buddy put in at the Gordonsville ramp one night in the kayaks and he lost a $500 Shimano and G Loomis set up within the first 15 minutes. I never knew he knew those kinds of words!

Wow! Great fish, was there a lot of action besides the beast?

Man that's a monster Rainbow! Did you notice if it had a band clipped to it's pectoral fin? Lately TWRA has been releasing retired brood fish, mostly big rainbows, into the Caney and you can tell by the band. I got a 19" Rainbow early in the Summer that had a band.

I was able to release her back into the water. We didn't see a tag but that would have been neat. We caught 6 more that night, nothing big and all rainbows. We camped at Edgar Evins Park and fished again in the morning and only caught 4 small ones. We were very impressed with Edgar Evins facilities and would recommend it.

That's a fatty! Congrats! I night fish out there about once a month in the summer and understand how hairy it can get. Float down to around Gordonsville and you'll cross over beavers the size of manatees that are very territorial. You will not see them coming. Do not be surprised if you see something that may appear to be a yeti on the shoreline just down from the highway truck stop waiving at you between vehicle lights passing above.
