Went out to cheatham dam last night after work. Debated on trying to fish it at night but glad I did. Water was a nice 12k cfs and was able to drift well. Bounced some live skips around and had some good bites, then hooked the one in the pic. Very fun, he took off like a train. Was the only fish landed that night but worth it! I just gotta figure out a way to keep the bait alive...

Looks like that area is very well lite for night fishing.

hey brewer I know this sounds crazy but get a decent mess laundry bag stick a clothes hanger thru the top to make a circle then tie some rope to it. you can put shad or skips in it and then throw it back into the water. it works like a live well. know it sounds crazy but it works. I took it a step further and made one with steyfoam around the top.

I can vouch for this! i have done this and still do! i bought one of pool noodles/floats and cut 4 pieces and zip tied it to the top. Works like a charm and not too much drag if your drifting the river as long as your not using a jumbo laundry bag.

Would the collapsible metal mesh fish baskets work?

gordon,
thanks for the tip man! I think I will try that, I was attempting to do the same with a small Fraibill yellow bait bucket but I dont think it was big enough? If its not too much to ask, do you have a picture of such a contraption? im having a hard time visualizing it with the wire hanger haha...

I have a livewell on the boat, but they dont stay alive there and I cant really run the aerator constantly, I just bought one of those bucket aerators to supplement oxygen flow but I dont know if it will be enough, Ive also heard throwing a little ice pack or cubs in helps keep them alive a little bit. My current system is catching them on sabiki rigs and immediatly transfering them onto my striper pole, but that becomes difficult when they are less active or not near the area im fishing.
again, thanks for the tips!

yeah I'll post a pic when I get off work if I can figure out how to.. it's always confused me on how to post on here.. but the laundry bag live well just sits in the water so the shad or skippe won't die. collapsible might work I don't know.

Get a stringer with the clips and hang skippies over the side. They'll last a long time.

For shad I used a Ace Hardware 5 gallon bucket with a lid. Then I drilled holes around the top third of the bucket. Of course don't forget to tie a rope to the handle and place in water. I don't put skipjack in this but I do use it for Shad.

thanks much for taking the time to reply with the pic gordon. I'll have to try that, yesterday I went out after work to test my little aerator and it seemed to help some, maybe extended thier life by an hour or so and kept them somewhat friskier heh.
fishing was pretty good at cheatham, caught 5 or 6 smallish stripers and a couple whitebass and catfish

I'm so jealous I think it's like 45 mins for me to get to cheatem and I can't afford to put the new tires on the boat to get it there. Is it only accessible by boat?

No, you can fish from the shore. There is a nice railed walkway right next to the turbine discharge. It does get crowded there though, ive seen people everyday of the week at every hour haha. They seem to do ok catching stripers and catfish. I fish from my boat, which I dont know if its easier fighting the current haha, but its more effective it seems. Being able to drift the entire stretch there is nice, or anchoring up just on the side of the main current. If you fish from the bank make sure to go to the south side, the boat launch is north side.
