If I get stuck somewhere on the river and the water (1) gen arrives can I still paddle upstream along the shore against current or am I just toast?
My boat is designed to be open water offshore type boat and handles current well. The boats pretty fast but that said I am not looking to fly upstream against it just be able to move. Time is not an issue either if water hits me just wanting to see what I am limited too if I need a slow paddle back up its no big deal.
This will help me determine to launch up or downstream of my target.
Thanks!

I guess it was about 6 years ago...or so...that I flipped in a kayak down at what everyone calls the handicap pier......across the steps at end of campground. It was in December and I needed to get out pretty quick. browntrout's son was with us and he paddled back upstream to get my vehicle and have it waiting for me at parking lot on the waterfall side. He paddled it pretty quick IMHO. I know I was sure happy when I saw my car. It was cold...I had no dry bag. Now before someone jumps in and says I need to carry a dry bag there is no need for that. When I started kayaking after that I had everything.....clothes....shoes ...towels. That was a lesson learned. But the point is yes...you can paddle back up stream on one generator.

Glad u came out of that ok.
Thanks for the info.
I wont be there but somewhere downstream and rather fish down to where i want to be in the morning than the other way.

I think with one generator you could do it but it may not be the best idea to plan that. I've seen generation schedules change within an hour of what was predicted to happen. You wouldn't want to be a couple miles downstream planning to paddle upstream to get home and then realize that 1 generator turned into 2 generators.
Plus just with the winding and changing contours of that river some areas can be almost still on low water and some move sort of quickly on low water. You may have difficulty paddling upstream in the latter described areas if there is even only one generator running.

It can be done, but depends on your paddling ability, and the barge you're paddling. I've had some people ask to come along on some trips I take and I refuse because of the requirements of some of the paddles I do, actually sometimes I ask myself "why am I out here in this?".

Don't be teasing me with that pic Jeremy. :) Will take that all day every day.
I am in a Moken 14.
The distance involved would be 1.5 - 2 miles tops from take out but on the downstream side from the car.

That is true.
Worst case scenario I just tie up and take a nap till it stops but am hoping I can not be just stuck.

Really messed up my plans too. My sons job is going to slow down in August so we had planned on fishing the Pond in his kayaks a lot through the week.

Are you able to tell what level the sluice is going to be? And is it only running at the same time as generation? I know everyone said at 250 it's fine in the pond with kayaks but I guess if they are pushing more water than that it would not be good. I saw this on fb:
"Center Hill Dam will begin Sluice Gate operations in conjunction with hydropower generation starting 23 July and will continue until further notice."

Don't worry about it. They only run it simultaneously with the generation and at that time it will be very dangerous to be anywhere on that river in a kayak, x100 in 'the pond'. When the generators are off they either don't run the sluice or if they do it will be the 250 which is negligible and actually makes the fishing better. Plans are still on for tomorrow night.

Jeremy the photo shown is actually the spillways cracked open a weeee bit .. which is actually very tame .. The business ends are actually in turbine bays depending which Dam your at .. I've been below Cordell Hull with all Spill ways full open and full Gen in my Bay Boat... Bad News Bears !!!!
The wife and I have done a lot of canoeing down stream below Center Hill During different Gen schedules one or more gens .. Maybe with one Gen. and using the eddies a good yaker could navigate upstream ... <'TK><:)

I think I could do it in the boat I am in but not going to try it with the sluice bump added to generation.
I will float it in the yak soon under flow just not this weekend now.

Can you tell much of a difference between 1 generator and 1 with the sluice if you're between Happy Hollow and Betty's Island?
Are all of the gravel bar islands underwater with this level of generation?
